“Communication is a skill that you can learn. It's like riding a bicycle or typing. If you're willing to work at it, you can rapidly improve the quality of every part of your life.” (Author Brian Tracy) Communication is an indispensable skill when it comes to being an effective leader. There are various strategies in effective communication, and having an understanding of multiple strategies will further contribute to the way you communicate with others. To be an effective communicator, you must comprehend the qualities that make for poor communication, or rather the barriers associated with defective communication. Communicating your ideas or suggestions in a clear, concise, and informative manner will eliminate any misinterpretations and properly educate the receiver on your perspective of the situation. When communicating with an individual, it is crucial to listen and interpret exactly what the sender is conveying, which includes analyzing and diagnosing everything being said before replying. If you are unclear what the sender is communicating, you should ask questions to get a full understanding before offering any kind of solution. When communicating with an audience, you should understand the diversity of to whom you are speaking to and what the message you intend them to receive. As an employee in a non-leadership role, I use these skills every day to fully comprehend what my manager is looking for from me. It has been found that males tend to converse sitting side-by-side, while females enjoy a more face-to-face exchange. (Study.com. (n/d)) Status difference occur when employees feel threatened or uncomfortable speaking with employees either higher or lower on the corporate ladder. This issue can be typically resolved by finding equal ground and making an effort to getting to know this person. Finally, physical separation is the fifth barrier in communication that can cause issues and draw away from the point you are attempting to get across. This barrier is one I deal with a lot, since half of the people I work with are across the country it is difficult to portray your meaning without non-verbal communication. I communicate over instant message, leaving all messages up for interpretation, especially when I have never physically met these individuals. I can only imagine the tone and manner they are speaking to me and that can often cause confusion and
