Back in the 1900’s college wasn’t a such a big deal; in 1970, only 26% percent of average American workers had an education beyond high school. Today, almost 60% of all jobs in America require a higher education of some sort. The Value of a College Degree, by Emily Hanford, stresses the importance of college by saying, “Everything has changed. People who don 't get some kind of post-secondary education are quickly falling out of the American middle class.” She is saying that America is changing and if you don’t do what it takes to keep up, you’re not going to be able to maintain your economic position. Catherine Rampell says jobs are looking for people with a college degree because, “…so many people are going to college now, those who do not graduate are often assumed to be unambitious or less capable” (Catherine Rampell). College isn’t just a place for education, it is a place where you lose yourself and find the better version. People say college isn’t for everyone, but those are the close-minded people speaking. The reason college isn’t for everyone is because you must open your mind to new information, new experiences, and new ideas; but not everyone does that. The college experience is a once in a lifetime experience. In college, you have almost all the freedom in the world to do whatever you want to do. Sometimes, I find the urge go out at two o’clock in the morning with my friends and just drive around, eat, and listen to music; there is no way I could get away with doing that at home. All this freedom teaches responsibility, you have to be able to make time for friends but keep your education your main priority. College shapes you in more ways than making you a more open-minded and responsible, college also teaches you how to deal with an extreme amount of stress. It is not a lie that college is stressful, but you’re going to have to learn how to deal with stress sometime in your life; why not learn how when you’re young? Plus, you’re with a whole bunch of people dealing with the same levels of stress as you are, so you can give each other support. College is also the place where you might find your special, romantic someone, or best friends for life. On average, employees with a college degree get paid more than employees without a college degree. In 2015, the average starting salary for people with college degrees was $48,500 while people who didn’t have a college degree got paid, on average, $23,900. According to the Census Bureau, people with a degree higher than a bachelor’s degree will make around $2.7 million than people with below a bachelor’s degree. The job you will be getting paid less at could be a job you hate, going to college makes sure you want the career you’re going after, so why get paid less for a career you hate when you could
