Everyone has heard about how you need to go to college to obtain a successful career. In today’s society, this is a true statement because of how we are advancing. Since our knowledge and understanding of things around us is constantly changing, we are continuously adjusting how we go about our daily lives and our jobs so we need to change the way we prepare to tackle these changes. Three writings that give different perspectives on the issue of the necessity of college are Should Everyone Go to College? by Stephanie Owen and Isabel Sawhill, Measuring ‘Greatness’ of Grads: The Gallup-Purdue Index, funded in part by a $2 million grant, will be the largest national study of college graduates, measuring their material and work successes and well-being by Ronald Roach, and The Magical Elements of College Linked to Long-Term Success in Work and Life by Brandon Busteed. A college education is necessary to be successful today because jobs are becoming harder and are constantly changing with what knowledge is required to do well in these jobs, it allows people to earn larger incomes on average, and helps with developing people in other aspects of their life outside of the workplace. One point that people like to focus on when discussing whether or not going to college is helpful is if the extra education is going to get people desirable jobs in the future. Something that people do not think about when they try to argue this point is that people have a different perspective on what makes a job desirable. Many people see a desirable job as one that pays a lot of money but this is not always the case. The topic of trying to define what a good job is was brought up in Measuring ‘Greatness’ of Grads by Ronald Roach when he mentions a statement by Dr. Victor M.H Borden, professor of Educational Leadership and Policy Studies at Indiana University, which says, "[Research efforts] need to go beyond the very limited economic outcome measures that have been purported as the be-all, end-all outcomes that students make in terms of employment after college, particularly because that focus is on certain types of jobs being better than others because you make more money" (Roach). I agree with this point because the perception of what a good job is should not always focus on how much money the person is making while doing it. When person is thinking of their dream job they should be focused on waking up and enjoying what they are doing every day rather than being so focused on how much money they are going to make. For example, teachers do not make a lot of money but most teachers love what they are doing and are very happy even though their paychecks do not represent the amount of education required to obtain their job. Although money does not always make a job a desirable one, it does make life a little easier when you have a good income.

This is supported by a quote from Should Everyone Go to College? by Stephanie Owen and Isabel Sawhill which says, “Hamilton Project research shows that 23- to 25-year-olds with bachelor’s degrees make $12,000 more than high school graduates but by the age 50, the gap has grown to $46,500” (Owen and Sawhill, 211). This quote shows that on average people when people decide to make an investment in their education, they are seeing that they are making more money than if they were to stop their education after they gained their high school diploma. Now making more money when you have a college degree is not always the case, there is still a good chance that you will have better job opportunities by having the degree. Not only does going to college help people with their career, it helps them with other aspects of their life. There are some opportunities that college students can take advantage of that people who choose not to go to college have that help future work performance.
