The Purpose Of College Essay

As a young person, choosing what to study is one of the hardest decision you have to make. According to a Washington Post article, “What’s the purpose of college: A job or an education?” by Jeffrey J. Selingo, learning and getting more knowledge about the world used to be a purpose of higher education, but nowadays it switched to getting a job after graduation rather than gaining more knowledge. Education is the most important factor in order to be successful, but lots of people are in college because their parents want them to, while others think that college is the next destination they have to go through after high school. The costs to get an undergraduate degree as much as to buy a car or even a house. The author claims that students have to pay that expensive tuition because “students have increasingly seen a bachelor’s degree as a means to an end: a job” (Selingo). By saying this, most of the students are on campus working toward a degree is to get a better job afterward. Because of this mindset, more and more people are attending colleges these days. If being asked, there is almost no one will answer that they are at school because they want to be educated. Scholars want to graduate as soon as possible in order to settle a job. Since grades are the only thing to consider whether or not you are getting a good job; therefore, it will easily create bad habits for them like cheating for tests and quizzes, instead of trying to learn from the knowledge, to get high …show more content…
This question sounds easy to answer but it is actually not. The majority of people, of course, should care about their income. Since the society values certain jobs more than the other and the value of money is so important nowadays; people tend to start thinking about how much income they are expected to get for this particular job. When time comes for college student to choose a career, they think that finding one that can actually support the financial is a priority idea. Choice of major in college is more or less your choice of a career in the future (with few exceptions). So you should find a major that can actually lead to a decent paycheck. For example, people who have their own family and their kids should consider the income that selected job will give them. That income does not only support them as an individual but it also supports them as a whole family. If one’s interest doesn't have an ability to raise their family, they might have to consider again. There is some people have to make a living cost for their entire family. Because of that reason, lots of people tend to choose majors based on income rather than interest. Even though college is way too expensive to simply consider it a ‘growing experience’, it is the place that helps students to learn, to gain more skills while the outside
