In this study, we determined to identify an effective teaching -learning strategy to assist prelicensure nursing students in the development of clinical judgment before graduation. AS researchers we wondered whether reflective journaling following progressive high-fidelity simulation (HFS) scenarios might be an effective teaching -learning strategy to assist prelicensure nursing students in the development of clinical judgment.
To answer this question, we conducted a qualitative and interpretive description study involving 30 prelicensure nursing students to partake in four progressive high-fidelity simulation (HFS) scenarios during one of their nursing courses. We noticed that each student showed improvement in their understanding of patient illness, correlations, interpretations, skill acquisition, self-confidence and communication as they progress from first to fourth reflective journal. Using the comment in the reflective journal, we identified noticed that each student had progressive improvement in areas of (1) expectations of the patients, (2) understanding of focused assessment, (3) interpretation of medications, laboratory data, and diagnosis, (4) communication with patient,?( 5) collaboration and inter-professionalism, (6) prioritizing interventions, (7) skillfulness with interventions, and (8.) incorporation of skills and information into real patient
