Capital punishment is the legal authorization of killing someone as punishment for a crime. Capital punishment has happened since the 1600’s and is still popular today. It is an accepted law today by a majority of people worldwide. I can understand why people agree with the act of capital punishment because the criminals who committed the crime need to be punished. Apparently, a prison sentence is not enough for people. There are several reasons why the death penalty is not a good idea. One reason is that it doesn’t dissuade. The US had a 2012 murder rate of 4.8 victims per 100,000. In other words, 15,000 were victims. Capital punishment is not doing its job, as each year, more people are becoming victims to the crimes. A second reason is that capital punishment is hypocritical. The nation commits murder, while at the same time, denounces the practice of murder. The nation is not a murder and refuses to be put in that category. For example, Ted Bundy; he killed thirty people just because he enjoyed doing it. The nation doesn’t want to be compared to Ted Bundy. Another reason of why capital punishment is wrong is that it is cruel. It is fair to say that society is guilty of equal cruelty towards criminals. There are five legal methods of execution: gassing, hanging, firing squad, electrocution, and lethal injection. These legal methods are supposed to be as painless as possible. There are risks and accidents that can occur because of these methods. Overall, capital…
