The UCR is a reporting program through the FBI and is responsible for tracking crimes that are reported to the police. The program collects information from all over the United States. No the prosecution did not seek the death penalty. There were not any reasons that made public but one speculation was Simpson’s lack of felony history. Another was jurors might have had a hard time convicting a football legend to death (LA Times).Most prosecutors seek the death penalty to gain an advantage in the verdict which means that each member of the jury must express an objection or no objection to the death penalty and they would be willing to sentence someone to death (Schmalleger p.32).
Some of the pros and cons of capital punishment are: the death penalty is more expensive than life in prison but one could argue that the safety risks of guards and inmates are high with keeping a violent criminal behind bars for life. Penitentiaries were created for the criminal later on. As criminology came to be other forms of punishment came into play such as providing education, rehab and intervention programs of all kinds such as domestic violence.
One of the most important aspects of punishment is the possibility of rehabilitation especially for the younger offender. To be able to learn from their mistakes is a great triumph in human conditioning.
There are many outreach and intervention programs. Probation is also an alternative to prison. Giving lectures on the dangers of criminal behavior is a good alternative to prison. I am all for making an attempt for someone to seek help. However it is dependent on the crime. Shoplifting, DUI, forgery, embezzlement, and arson to name a few would be some for rehabilitation. There will always be religious organizations out there that are willing to help those offenders that seek
