“What do you want to be when you grow up?” is the famous question that I am sure every child has been asked at least once. There has always been something unique about my answer to this question, however. What I find unique about my answer to this question is that it has never changed. Not once have I answered this question anything different than “a teacher.” Becoming a teacher is the right choice for me as it is a career I have always wanted to pursue and am passionate about, I have had experience in this field of work and what I am doing now will help me in my future as a teacher.
I have always looked up to teachers. I feel that teachers in today’s society are underappreciated because if you think about it they are the main factor that helps shape the future of our society, however, are not treated the best. A main example that shows they are underappreciated is their pay. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, “The median annual wage for elementary school teachers was $53,400. The lowest 10 percent earned less than $35,630, and the top 10 percent earned more than $83,160.” (“Pay”). This might seem like a decent pay for a job with normal workday hours, however, a teacher’s workday does not end when the school day is over. The main part of a teacher’s job, which is actually teaching, occurs within those hours, however; they also work a lot outside of the classroom that they are not getting paid for.
