The history of barrel racing

(picture)

Barrel racing is a timed pattern of 2 left turns and 1 right turn. This is a very competitive sport and every second counts against you. You have to work in a team to reach you goal. And out in the arena you can’t hear anything except your heartbeat and your horse's foot steps.

Barrel racing was invented in the early 1930’s but wasn’t originally for speed it was more of a horsemanship competition, by showing how they can maneuver throughout the pattern. It was meant for women to do in rodeos since men bull riding and calf roping. The ladies wanted to get to shine and get to compete in something. Also in the beginning a group of girls started the GRA (Girls Rodeo Association).
