Studies show that the authoritarian parent has negative effects on several aspects of a child (Bridges). This research provides that religion can offer some helpful advice and in some cases the wrong advice on parenting styles. However, in other studies it showed that the negative effects only seemed to occur in white middle class people and some may not effect across other characteristics such as, race, age, sex, and socioeconomic groups. Conservative and fundamentalist Protestant groups promote an authoritarian parenting style which includes a strong focus on the how well a child obeys and also, frequently encourages spanking also known as corporal punishment. In another study a researcher Gershoff, Miller and Holden found that parents who were Adventist, Baptist, and Pentecostal protestant group were more likely to spank a three year old child than Methodist and Episcopal protestant groups, Roman Catholics, and also those with no religion
