Spanking is the act of physically beating a child either on the buttocks or any part of the child’s body by using the hand or objects such as canes. According to Kazdin & Benjet (2003), spanking is defined as the hitting of a child with an open hand on the buttocks or extremities with the intention to discipline without causing physical harm. The body part that is mostly spanked is the buttocks, but also the face, the palm and the back of the hand as well. Objectives typically used for spanking includes but not limited to canes, belts, paddles and shoes. According to O'Callaghan (2006), children in the south are spanked the most and less family income also relates to more spanking. In other words poor families are more likely to spank their children when children misbehave than rich families. In addition, African American mothers are know to spank their children more than any other race and parents who hold fundamental beliefs in their religion are also more likely to spank than those who do not. Some Christian’s parents practiced spanking due to the biblical reference “spare the rod and spoil the child” (Proverbs 13:24), whereas other parents practiced spanking due to the human culture effect. Proverbs 13 verse 24 implies that parent should punish their children when they misbehave and not punishing children can spoil the children. Furthermore, the verse explains that parents who love their children punish their children and in contrast parents who hate their children do not punish their children.
