Dr. James Garbarino a famous author and Professor once said, “The initial trauma of a young child may go underground but it will return to haunt us.” In recognition of the widespread and pervasive nature of child abuse, one should ask themselves “to Spank or Not to Spank?” Each day, the safety and well-being of some children around the world are threatened by child abuse and neglect. Therefore, child abuse has become a global concern that is deeply ingrained in cultural, economic and social practices.

For example people still continue to use religious explanations for why they spank their children, and some parents believe it is an effective tool. (Albanese, 2009, p.202) Is it an effective tool? Or do parents practice what they experienced in early ages on their children? A study conducted by Children's Hospital of Eastern Ontario and Durrant et al. (2004) on physical punishment have showed that there is no correlation or evidence of any benefit to using physical punishment (Albanese, 2009, p.198). According to the studies, it can lead to weaker internalization of moral values and risk of physical injuries (Albanese, 2009, p.198). Due to the damages that are caused by child abuse, Canada has dedicated Section 43 of the Criminal Code of Canada to child abuse and neglect which states:
“Every school teacher, parent or person standing in place of a parent is justified in using force by way of correction towards a pupil or child, as the case may be, who is under his care, if the force does not exceed what is reasonable under the circumstances.” (Albanese, 2009, …show more content…
I believe that when a community invests wisely in children and families it will be evident later on when the upcoming generation pays it back. Therefore, it is important to acknowledge the fact that all children have a right to experience healthy growth and development. However when child abuse and neglect interferes with that opportunity, the chances of putting the upcoming generation at risk is very probable. Which is why I stand on the contrary side of parents today who continue to use religious explanations for child abuse, that believe it’s an effective tool, and who use the same punishment they had when they were young.
