Minnesota, Vikings running back Adrian Peterson found himself under fire in 2014 for using a switch to physically punishing his four-year-old son after his son had pushed another little boy off a motor cycle video game. The method Peterson used to punish his child resulted in the boy displaying welts and laceration across his thighs and buttocks. Peterson admitted to striking the boy through a series of text message sent to the boy’s mother and only displayed real regret at the fact that he had hit his son’s testicles. Peterson maintained he was only disciplining his son the same way his father had disciplined him, that the “whoppings” as he referred to them, built his character and made him who he is today. In an anonymous survey conducted in 2008, which focused on mothers with children under the age of 18 years, they concluded that the likelihood of physical abuse increased by 3% with every additional instance of spanking since the intensity of spanking needed to increase with each instance to remain effective. Furthermore, when parents used objects, such as belts or switches, to spank their children they were nearly nine times more likely to report physically abusive behaviors. (Frechette p.137) It wasn’t until the 1960’s that experts began to examine the effects physical discipline had on children’s social, emotional and behavioral well-being, especially in regards to the long-term side effects. Even in today’s society, there exist various opinions in regards to corporal punishment. However, the American Academy of Pediatrics encourages care-givers to rely on other approaches when correcting their children’s behavior to ensure the decreased likelihood of the “ten negative outcomes.” (Terri-combs-Orme …show more content…
(Gershoff, E T) Furthermore, they often have unrealistic expectations of their child’s cognitive ability which causes them to attribute their child’s behavior as being difficult or problematic compared to that of other children. (Zohreh) Spanking is often used to punish misbehavior and to reduce the occurrence of undesirable behavior in the short term but the long-term effects of spanking must be considered as well. In one study with over 3,000 preschoolers showed that increased spanking in 1-3 year old’s resorted in increased aggressive behavior through 3-5 years. Further studies involving children aged five through early adolescence, have shown significant effects on children’s level of aggression. Ronald W. Pies is a physiatrist and a professor at SUNY Upstate Medical University. Although he states in his article, “ Is it OK to spank a child every once in a while? “, that he and his wife do not have children, therefore he tries to keep all judgments aside, he still can not ignore the extensive negative evidence that corporal punishment (which includes spanking) has on children’s mental health. I believe the author is trying to come off very unbiased so he can catch the attention of parents without making them feel offended or attacked so he can explain the effects spanking has on children, hoping to change their beliefs on discipline. I like how he leaves his key question open in the title to catch the attention of people on both sides of the controversy; he doesn’t give his stance away quickly, which evades them an opportunity to skip over his article.…

The book Why Spanking Doesn’t Work, lists eleven undesirable side effects of spanking their children. The first undesirable side effect is that spanking a child will lower their self-esteem which in turn can send the message that the child is of little value to the parent who spanked them. The next undesirable side effect of spanking is that it will create a display of bad feelings in children which can in turn have a feeling of emotional distress and lower the well-being of the child. A third point of the undesirable side effects of spanking is that it will alienate the child from the parents which cause nervousness and tension when the child is around the parents. The fourth undesirable side effect is that spanking will cause children to…

Although in the article “Justice Childhood Love Lessons,” by bell hooks, the author claims when a parent hits their child it has irreversible effect on one’s child throughout their lives, parents are doing the best they can. It’s hard being a parent and in some cases leads to spanking or other forms of punishment, leading to said punishment doing more harm than good and affect children more negatively than one may have planned in the beginning. Although in most cases it’s a good source of punishment, parents often take it too far. A parent should be able to have a deep connection with their child or children, spanking can keep over-reactive outbursts to a minimum, thus leading to a more calm and respectful environment for the child where he…

Spanking has long been implemented as a form of discipline to correct misbehavior in children. As the proverb goes, “Whoever spares the rod hates their children, but the one who loves their children is careful to discipline them”. While spanking, or more professionally referred to as corporal punishment, has stood as a tried and trusted means of discipline, controversy regarding its integrity, value, and effects has been brought to serious question; and really, this shouldn’t be terribly shocking. The most basic and fundamental aspect of spanking itself is to strike an individual, and this can seem entirely skewed. However, when done in an appropriate manner, corporal punishment ultimately benefits those who receive its brunt in ways that other punishment methods fail to do as effectively.…

The analysts claim to have controlled for other variables that could account for aggressive behavior in children including alcohol abuse by the parents or violence between the parents, etc. Time also reports that "The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) does not endorse spanking for any reason, citing its lack of long-term effectiveness as a behavior-changing tactic." What should we make of this research? Does the Bible say anything about spanking children?…

Parents have to be cautious when disciplining their children to avoid trouble. Unfortunately, there is not a set behavior that warrants a spanking. Some sources say that it is okay to spank because it aids in building a strong relationship of respect with the parent and child, and it results in well-mannered children and adults. Parents also say that it is normal to spank children and that it is just disciplinary actions (“The Spanking Debate” 1).…

In disciplining children, parents should do everything as kindly and gently as they can first. They should try to understand a child, make sure the child understands what is expected of them, use reasoning and find an adequate nonphysical consequence, like a "timeout" or taking away privileges. But if the child won't cooperate, some kids — at least some of the time — need something more forceful to back it up. b) Establishes Respect Many kids who grew up getting spank by their parents are more respectful to adults c) Disciplinary Tool When used correctly, spanking is safe and effective, and can be an appropriate tool for parents.…

The 2013 study titled “Spanking and Child Development Across the First Decade of Life” examined maternal and parental spanking of children at the age of 3 and 5. This was then used to find an association between spanking and an externalizing behavior and receptive vocabulary through the age of 9 (MacKenzie, 2013). The results were that a high-frequency of spanking issued by parents and especially by fathers at the age of 5 showed an association with lower vocabulary scores at the age of 9. The second study, conducted in 2010 titled “Love, discipline and elementary school achievement: The role of family emotional climate” found that using forms of physical discipline in kindergarten was associated with lower fifth grade math achievement. It also found that children who were spanked were at a higher risk of academic failure in the fifth grade (Bodovski and Min-Jong Youn,…

This study addresses, how corporal punishment can help shape children into successful adults. Corporal punishment teaches the child self-discipline, because they learn when they commit a negative act or behavior, then they will pay the consequences for that negative act/behavior. When a child is spanked for committing a negative act, they often abstain from committing negative acts in the future. For instance, if a child gets a bad grade in school, then comes home and gets a spanking from his/her parent. They will most likely abstain from getting a bad grade in the future.…
