A common offender is gaming. Violent games, such as “Call of Duty” and “Grand Theft Auto”, idolize guns and warfare. In fact, the sole purpose of some of these is to cause destruction and despair in order to succeed. Not only will a gamer find guns in several of his video games, but people can also find guns sitting in front of them on the television. Some of the highest grossing films in our country involve some form of gun violence, one of those being “The Dark Knight Rises.” On one fateful night, during a showing of this film, James Eagan Holmes entered this theater and murdered 12 people while injuring 70 others. Holmes entered the theater, dressed similarly to the film’s villain, and ended 12 lives, and he ruined 70 more. However, the issues do not end here. Sitcoms commonly feature firearms in certain episodes, and while the messages typically do not support the sacred 2nd Amendment, they still help prove that our country loves guns. This undeniable fact gives us insight on why mass shootings seem to be a problem. A gun, an item that never fails to bring attention and cause damage, is everywhere we turn. Most common and clear is the influence of pop culture, because it is so prevalent in today’s society. Pop culture, with all of its violence and destruction, can sway a person from his good morals towards a dangerous dark path. Another great setback that cause gun violence is shortened prison sentences. The length of a prison sentence can directly and indirectly impact a criminal’s intentions after he is released. However, the most evident cause of gun violence is certainly the decline in parenting and family values, because it directly influences society’s youth in such a terrible way.
