One Smooth Stone: Management Style

Management is something that all businesses need to have. According to the dictionary, it means "the organization and coordination of the activities of a business ignorer to achieve defined objectives; the act or manner of managing; handling, direction, or control; skill in managing, executive ability; the person controlling and directing the affairs of a business, institution; audacious use of means to accomplish an end; collective body of those who manage or direct an enterprise; the directors and managers who have the power and responsibility to make decisions and oversee an enterprise" (n.d.). With all that said, One Smooth Stone is something that does management well. They are a company with two goals: to be effective and efficient when …show more content…
All them have different was of management. Majority of the jobs I have had do follow One Smooth Stone's motto of "smart, fast and kindness." All them except Habit. Habit, for example, seems to have both Theory X and Theory Y management styles. Theory X is "an authoritarian style where the productivity on the concept of a fair day's work, on evils of fetter-bedding and restriction of output, on rewards for performance because it reflects an underlying belief that management must counteract an inherent tenacity to avoid work" (n.d.). Theory Y is a "style of management which assumes that people will exercise self-direction and self-control in the achievement of organizational objectives to the degree that they are committed to the objectives" (n.d.). I say habit has both because of the two bosses that currently work there. One boss has the Theory X where she always micromanages and threatens those who do not follow "her rules." It has come to the point where she is in the office, no one wants to go to work because she thinks we all are not capable of doing our jobs. My other manager does have the Theory Y because he is the opposite of the other manager. He is nicer and actually encourages us. He does not give us talk about where we feel idiotic while doing our jobs. There was one time where he said that if we do good, he would pay for our dinner which encouraged us to get our job

These theories guided early managers to better organise their businesses to increase productivity. There are three major classical approaches to management: administrative principles, scientific management and bureaucratic organisation. These approaches assume that people act in a rational manner that is driven mainly by economic concern (Schermerhorn et al. 2014, p.36). MAIN IDEA Great managers and effective business leaders have an inbuilt bias for action. They don't dissipate their time and energy on peripheral issues-- like complaining about overwhelming workloads or trying to work despite tight budgets, barriers, setbacks, distractions and unsupportive bosses. Instead, good managers get to work purposefully on the organization's most important work-- cutting costs, improving efficiency and encouraging innovative thinking-- and get things done. Good managers harness willpower to improve both their individual performance and that of the organizations they manage. In essence, great managers stop trying to do more things and instead focus on getting the right things done.…
