A pilot is someone who is certified to operate aircraft in order to transport goods and/or

passengers from one location to the next, for leisure, business and commercial purposes. Pilots

can be employed by the government, corporations, commercial airlines, and can sometimes be

self-employed. Aircraft are usually operated by two pilots, who will take turns in controlling the

aircraft to avoid fatigue. Pilots are very essential to the function of the field of aviation.

The History

The field of aviation was jumpstarted on December 17, 1903 when Orville and Wilbur

Wright flew a heavier than air machine. From this day forward, Orville and Wilbur Wright

became known as the first airplane pilots. The field of aviation began to develop hastily as

inventors raced to expand upon the Wright brothers design. Many aviators in the early years

earned their living as “barnstormers,” which entertained people by doing stunts and taking

passengers on short flights through the countryside. Before long, airplanes would be used in the

military, and pilots became famous for their feats of daring perseverance and endurance in wars.

The airline industry was deregulated in 1978, and many thought the pay and status of pilots

would decrease. Nevertheless, the high demand for airplanes created more jobs and money as

they had to keep up with the supply.
