Every chance for success in life depends on the amount of effort we put into achieving our goals. Throughout my life experiences, there has been only one motivation, the desire to become something great. Ever since I was a child, I always dreamed of becoming a pediatrician that would help others and make the world a better place. Academic and extracurricular activities in school provided me with the opportunity to start transforming myself into this individual that I want to become. All the events I have done these past few years, and plan to do in the future, have helped me to get one step closer to fulfilling my destiny of becoming a doctor. These current and future activities include taking dual credit courses, joining HOSA, and becoming a part of the premedical pathway.
Taking dual credit classes is an intense and challenging experience that demands sacrifice, but is very rewarding. Even though completing these courses was time consuming and difficult, through them I was able to learn how to properly study and take notes; an essential ability of a doctor. Another rewarding aspect of taking dual credit classes is that I will be able to graduate high school with forty-five college credits. In this organization, I learned several communicational skills and how to function with a team that works together for the common good of others. I always enjoyed helping out the community with this organization. Though as a member, I needed to present myself as a good role model for other students to look up too. I responsibly always showed up to every meeting and verbally inserted my ideas that I felt were necessary. These leadership and communicational skills are important qualities of a pediatrician, and the Health Occupations Students of America allowed me to master these skills early

With HOSA, I went out to different nursing homes conversing with patients and throwing them holiday parties. Furthermore, I participated in many different charitable efforts, such as raising money for Cystic Fibrosis, listening to the stories of patients and learning about their interactions with physicians. Through these experiences, I learned more about the different struggles patients and healthcare providers go through. As I began college, I continued my volunteer work in healthcare, volunteering at Texas Health Arlington Memorial Hospital. Learning about the impact physicians have on patients, I am inspired to pursue a career in medicine to be able to benefit the lives of others, easing and healing them physically through my actions as a physician and emotionally through my interactions with them as a…

Throughout my educational career I have had several great teachers. To choose my best teacher is difficult for me since each teacher was for a different course and they had a unique personality and style of teaching. Overall, I would have to choose Mr. Poska as my best teacher (not necessarily my favorite teacher). I took AP Calculus I & II with him during my junior year of high school, then I took Calculus III with him in my senior fall semester. I also happened to have him as my junior and senior advisor during Connect.…

Through my journey in high school, I have found that I am not always the smartest person in the room, but I am almost always the hardest worker. I find myself being the hardest worker because I am always working for the long-term goal. My biggest goal is to graduate from college with a master’s in education and to become a teacher. Of course, to do this I have to do well in school and challenge myself to make more than the bare minimum grade required to pass. This has led me to push myself in my classes, math team, extracurriculars, and volunteer work.…

Ever since my first AP course, sophomore year, I disliked anything that had to with the class for “advanced students.” It was not that the teachers were awful and putrid, but rather that I was the one who despised the rigor and work that came with becoming a full blown AP scholar. However, my junior year was quite different. I was still in AP courses, but I got to taste the sweetness of dual credit classes, as well as the fun that came with it.…

During my graduation, I was posted in a rural area in a community health care center. I learned what was expected of me as a student and future doctor, I got a firm grasp on how to work as part of a team in order to be organized and to solve problems effectively using different perspectives. It became apparent to me how medical knowledge and interpersonal skills are equally needed to give the patients the best possible service. I practiced these tools in classrooms, labs, as well as in a free clinic my classmates and I volunteered in an underserved area in Tijuana. I learned how to manage time and stress for situations that occurred outside of school such as my mother’s psychiatric disorder. Unfortunately, I have a failing grade from UABC because I was not present for the final exam for that course due to the fact that I had a placement test at the college I enrolled in in the US at the same time.…

I have grown so much in learning what I wanted to do with the rest of my life, and how to plan for it to make the best decisions. We used Career Cruising, which helped me find out which career is best for me, went to a college fair and visited Grand Valley, which helped me learn more about colleges and determine what my top three choices are, and we did research to find out how to live on our own, and the costs of different expenses. This class has caused me to become more aware of what to expect in the next few years of my life, and I now feel more prepared for what is to come. Before this class,…

Socrates—the Greek philosopher once stated, “the unexamined life is not worth living,” as he stood on trial for encouraging introspection among the masses. How many of us live the life we chose versus the life we find ourselves in due to a predetermined path, circumstances or societal pressures? I for one, belong to the second cases. In 2003, my parents and I immigrated to the U.S. from Ethiopia after winning a Diversity Visa (DV) lottery. This life changing opportunity came with its own challenges.…
