Adversity Science: A Personal Statement Of Purpose

My interests in science are rooted in studying the physiological and pathological ways of infectious disease and are what has me captivated within the medical field of research. The way the infectious agents evades our own bodily defenses and how they evolve to ward off medicine is a biological marvel that has me wanting to dissect every inch of the mechanisms that allows them to be such cunning infectious agents. I was the growing kid that spent hours of his free time reading and bookmarking science articles on the computer. My love for biology spilled over into the books I read and gave me the encouragement to take my first and last advance placement biology course before graduating high school. Getting an A in that biology class was my greatest …show more content…
HIV is well known within the African community and its diseases like HIV which continually gives me motivation to do research, so that the millions that would potentially die or be affected by that disease can have a sense of renewed hope and biological security. Another reason for my affinity for infectious disease research is the tall task it presents. Cancer and HIV are two examples of adversity science faces in terms of cures and vaccinations. How powerful these infectious diseases are makes it more worthwhile for me to divulge my life and time into discovering their secrets; I see all of this as a big chess match and psychological battle. At the end of the day it is mankind versus these pathogens. Who wants to survive the most and who has the best way of achieving that survival is what determines the ongoing battle against pathogens. I know as a potential medical researcher that it is about the future and our future generations. How can we save them and provide the most nourishing environment to carry them well past our …show more content…
I know that I am more than ready to engage in research and that is where a program like SPUR-Labs can help me to achieve my goals. Once reading the overview of this program, I knew instantly that this is an opportunity worth seizing. Being able to do research in one of the top medical schools in America while being fostered by some of the best scientists this world has to offer is such a privilege that would humble any fellow aspiring researcher like myself. The inclusion of other fellow undergraduate students who share similar passions with me would only motivate me and give me new friends that can work with me in the future. Networking can be the best start in anyone’s career, especially in the field of science and SPUR-Labs is all about introducing students to each other and to already established researchers. I have never let my disadvantages stop me from trying to better my academic career. I may not be a wealthy individual, but my work ethic, confidence, and determination are second to none. I believe in the tangibles I possess and I know that SPUR-Labs can help foster me into a world class scientist who can help fight against the microbes that are inflicting suffering on our species especially in third world

Cutting precisely on the lines, making sure I didn’t stray and accidently cut out part of an article, I carefully extracted the Sudoku puzzle from the daily newspaper before my father came to the breakfast table to read it. Then, working as fast as I could, I began deciphering the puzzle, eliminating numbers I knew didn’t belong in a certain box and writing, in tiny print, all the numbers that could potentially fit. Gradually, as the pieces came together, the completed puzzle unfolded. I glanced at the clock, scarfed down my cereal (which had gone soggy), and raced out the door just in time to catch the bus. During my hour long bus ride to school I would reflect on how I had solved the puzzle, wondering if there was a better way to approach…

During my time within the Laboratory, I successfully reverse engineered three different Henkel products and completed a competitive analysis of an equivalent product. Throughout the research process, I used many different analytical techniques including High Performance Liquid Chromatography and Gas chromatography–mass spectrometry to quantitatively and qualitatively define the components in the products, documenting the processes and results as the research was actively conducted. I am currently interested in developing my knowledge and research abilities in the fields of Virology, Gene Therapy, Biochemistry, Molecular and Cellular Biology, Microbiology, and Immunology. My primary area of interest lies within the study of microorganisms and their ability to cause devastating illness in Eukaryotic organisms. In my academic career, I have always been particularly fascinated with viral pathogens such as HIV and other agents…

“Thank you.” This was the simple yet meaningful response a patient’s husband gave to the emergency physician as I observed from the corner of the room. It was determined through a plethora of laboratory studies and clinical intuition that the patient was suffering from hepatorenal syndrome, secondary to her battle with metastatic colorectal cancer that spread to her liver. Her husband knew the prognosis, but this time she would be unable to recover. Despite the manic pace of the emergency department, Dr. Gregg took time to carefully explain the patient’s situation.…

I have always loved science. As a little girl, topics like the water cycle and the digestive system process interested me, and as a teenager, these topics stimulate a feeling of curiosity and awe in me. I hope to improve this broken world by pursuing a career in microbiology, food science, pharmacy, biopharmaceutical engineering, or biomedical engineering. I would love to attend the CHI Health Care Career Exploration Camp because I believe that it will help me narrow down my career choice. Other reasons are because of the vital information that I will receive about a career in the health industry, and because I believe that this experience would positively impact my future in a scientific career.…

Roman poet, Horace, once said that, "adversity has the effect of eliciting talents which in prosperous circumstances would have lain dormant. " What he means is that when a person is put through misfortune rather than a fortunate environment, they're more likely to display their talent. Throughout history, there have been many people that showed what they could do, especially during dark times. Nelson Mandela showed his skills of leadership when apartheid took place in South Africa. Stephen Hawking continued to show his brilliance even after he suffered from amyotrophic lateral sclerosis.…

It interests not only my scientific side but my love for problem solving as well. My enthusiasm for the sciences stems from my mom who works full time as a nurse. She has worked in almost every unit in her hospital, making her well-rounded and a perfect source for all my inquiries regarding medicine and the practices surrounding it. The love for problem solving originated from my dad who has always pushed my analytical thinking and encouraged my investigative drive. For me, I believe it is crucial to not only identify the issue regarding the immense and rapid spread of disease in Liberia but also to provide an alternative method that will not interfere nor disrespect their existing…

The subject of science has always been an interest of mine, more specifically biology. My love for this subject began to develop during my sophomore year of high school and ever since, the human body has intrigued me. Anatomy has always been a strong point throughout my education, as it came so easily to me. It is extremely fascinating that humans are so similarly structured, being that each and every human contains the same outline. Although humans are internally similar, externally we are able to look so different.…

Plus, the health MDGs were still leaving important gaps as they too neglect the focus towards non-communicable disease. Due to economic constraint, the interests and activities in R&D for neglected diseases were usually only driven by not-for-profit community, industry and major philanthropists (Moran 2014: 229). Government were usually entrusted R&D only for medicines of high value (Moran 2014: 229). Thus, even though de-securitizing HIV/AIDS opened a medium for the development of other infection diseases, the world still see infection diseases as threatening more than other diseases. And as to what threatens, there is always a prioritization over diseases that affect the people of higher income.…

In conclusion, from studying these four texts I now realise that there are plenty ways to cope with adversity and that a lot of people do it in their own way. Some people cope with adversity by taking it out on someone else which could also result in that person abusing their power e.g teacher, police. I have learned more about the Nazi “work camps” that were around in World War 2, I feel much more sympathy for the Jewish people and what they went through because I understood they were in camps and were forced to work, but seeing a movie that reenacts the same events, it really made me understand how extreme the abuse was from the Nazis. I also can’t believe how frightening it would be, being sent to the gas chambers with your family members…
