I have always loved science. As a little girl, topics like the water cycle and the digestive system process interested me, and as a teenager, these topics stimulate a feeling of curiosity and awe in me. I hope to improve this broken world by pursuing a career in microbiology, food science, pharmacy, biopharmaceutical engineering, or biomedical engineering. I would love to attend the CHI Health Care Career Exploration Camp because I believe that it will help me narrow down my career choice. Finding a program that would help me explore my interests in science and provide me with the knowledge to procure a profession in the medical field was a very rigorous task, however the Health Profession Recruitment and Exposure Program clearly emerged on top. After reading the description available online, I knew that HPREP would not only enhance my interest in the medical field, but also reshape my vision of the science world. I look forward to participating in the small group workshops led by medical students as I believe they will expose me to medical activities early on in my career that will spark a further interest. Also the ability to ask questions and work with the medical students, fellow students, and teachers will enable me to make connections, obtain unique advice and allow me to have a mentor or person I can reach out to and follow his or her footsteps to my own goals.…

Being a camp counselor for a pediatric cancer patient summer camp is the most personally rewarding, transformative and inspiring experience I have been a part of. We are a close-knit family, many of which I consider to be my personal heroes. Proximity to campers and their families keeps me optimistic, and camp memories continue to serve as poignant and powerful reminders for why I aspire to be a physician. During our "off-season", I am engaged with two committees, where I help plan next summer's camp, and visit local hospitals to recruit campers and…

My interests in science are rooted in studying the physiological and pathological ways of infectious disease and are what has me captivated within the medical field of research. The way the infectious agents evades our own bodily defenses and how they evolve to ward off medicine is a biological marvel that has me wanting to dissect every inch of the mechanisms that allows them to be such cunning infectious agents. I was the growing kid that spent hours of his free time reading and bookmarking science articles on the computer. My love for biology spilled over into the books I read and gave me the encouragement to take my first and last advance placement biology course before graduating high school. Getting an A in that biology class was my greatest…

Being a camp counselor last summer allowed me develop a companionship with my campers by leading activities, inspiring positive choices, acting as a role model, and building community amongst adolescents. These happenings were transformative for both the children and counselors. Along with this, I participate in mentoring programs for childhood cancer victims. Being a survivor, I’m often more capable of empathizing with the situation, than someone who has never experienced a similar illness.…

Attending the NCSU Engineering Career Fair as a freshman was initially an intimidating experience, but as I got more comfortable in the environment I was able to receive valuable feedback. I talked to multiple companies (generally, the ones that were the least busy) and had them answer some questions that I have generated prior to attending. Because I realize that I do not have many of the qualifications necessary to land an internship, I used my time to learn about what the companies seek in an employee in order to help me make the most of my years of undergraduate education. The first company I talked to was Sageworks, which is a private, local software company that provides financial analysis.…

As of now, I am taking Anatomy & Physiology II and even though I am learning a lot about the human body, I would value any opportunity that I could have being taught at a hospital rather than out of a book or in a…

This mixture of people fascinated me and eventually led me to want to research how culturally different people interact and how a country like the United States can thrive on diversity.…
