Each person has their own strategy, style, and tactics for how they deal with conflict (Folger, Poole, Stutman, 2013 p. 136). A person’s strategy is when they plan out a set of tactics or behaviors that they plan to follow exactly. Styles are unconscious and do not require planning ahead (Folger, Poole, Stutman, 2013 p. 136). A competing style is classified as high in assertiveness and low in cooperation An accommodating style is low in assertiveness and high in cooperative. An avoiding style is low in assertiveness and low in cooperation. A collaborative style is high in both assertiveness and cooperation. The employee in this situation would probably have a compromising style. This style is medium in both assertive and cooperating (Folger, Poole, Stutman, 2013 p. 110). It has been described as sharing or horse-trading (Folger, Poole, Stutman, 2013 p. 110). I think the competing style most accurately describes the behaviors and actions of an overbearing boss who is only looking to satisfy his or her own needs. The compromising style would likely accurately describe the employee because they are considering their own needs as well as the fact that they still need a job. This would mean that they have considered the consequences of not being flexible and open to working overtime at all.
