Absent Fathers In The Other Wes Moore

In this book “The other Wes Moore” by “Wes Moore” the author is about two boys with identical names who grew up in Baltimore with similar histories and difficult childhoods. Both boys hung out in the streets and ran into trouble with the police. One became a Rhodes Scholar and the other serving like in prison for a felony murder. However, what kept Wes’s stories from being the same was absent fathers, the role of mothers and their choices in life. To begin with growing up with absent fathers affected both Wes in different ways. Author Wes father, a television journalist was there for him just for a moment and then died when he was about three years old. Though it was hard for him to grow up, he couldn’t find anyone to replace him with. Other Wes father was a drunk addict that never took responsibility. He left before Wes was born and only meet him twice in coincidence. This affected Wes because he didn’t have his father to show him the way and his absence made him have a hard childhood. He stood in military school not wanting to be there, at first, graduated from the University of Johns Hopkins and gained respect from other people. Which automatically changed his life. Unlike the other Wes chose the street. Became a father at a young age, was involved in several arrest do to selling drugs. He had the opportunity to change when he was at Job Corp but that was not enough for him to support himself and his family. Do to this he got involved in an armed robbery and serving life in prison. Despite author, Wes had a better education and experienced things that allowed him to make better choices.
