The Other Moore's The Other Wes Moore

Decent Essays
In the book, The Other Wes Moore, two boys sharing the same name grow up in similar living situations. The boys resemble each other in terms of both being fatherless and growing up in rough areas where a life of crime and gang involvement is almost inevitable (according to the University of Michigan, only 76% of African American's who attend high school graduate while the others are most likely to spend the rest of their lives involved with drugs). This fate was not predetermined for both Wes Moore's due to the simple fact that they did not experience entirely similar upbringings. While the social environment in both cases exposed the boys to a life of crime the influence of direct role models, especially family had an even stronger impact.

In the novel written by Wes Moore entitled “The Other Wes Moore, told stories about the fates of two different people with the same name and living area. Based on my reading, I found out that the author life is more fortunate than the other Wes Moore. This is because the author’s mother was more concern about his child education and behaviour compared to the the other Wes Moore’s mother. I perceive that the author’s mother was more concern due to the clear details written in the book about the action that the mother took when she knew her son was not doing well. However, the stories in Chapter 6 did not tell any specific steps that the other Wes Moore’s mother took when his son has been caught by the police.…

Deviance is defined as the action of behaviors that go against social norms, for instance, being disrespectful to an elderly person or stealing from a church would be described as deviant behavior because the actions are not viewed as saint. Although what may seem obvious to others of what can viewed as deviant others can view something as not being deviant simply because deviance is subjected to different people. Since it is also based on what society thinks is “not normal” there are groups of people who revolve around the idea of bad behavior. There are also many things that are incorporated when it comes to defining deviance. Gender, age, race, location and social status are just a few examples of what can be included.…
