I am glad that I had an opportunity to interview my pharmacist whom I consider my mentor. She sets an example for me that I will always follow and to whom I go to during my hard times. She is a Long Island University alumni, class of 1995. Her name is Meena Akhter who owns a pharmacy in The Bronx. The name of the pharmacy is Take Care Pharmacy. She owns the pharmacy since 2014, so it has been a long time and she is still continuing to prosper her business. Before she owned her own pharmacy, she used to work in a partnership business in a pharmacy in Manhattan; according to her it was not a good experience since she was deceived by her partner not once but twice, who was also her friend. However, she said that her experiences taught her many ugly faces of life. She also struggled a lot in her personal life in a way that restricted her from continuing her pharmacy career. In spite of her hardship, she says that she stands strong and is proud of herself and her profession. I admire her courage and strength. She portrays excellent leadership in her own pharmacy and she is the boss of two of her staff pharmacists, six technicians and two interns. When I asked her about her leadership style, her response was that leadership is all about serving others the best way possible, keeping in mind how you can set yourself as an example. It is creativity, knowledge, planning; most importantly it is the capability of creating a productive team where you all coordinate and cooperate to work efficiently. She also added, that it is important to build the courage to make your voice heard as a leader. I was curious to ask her how did she become a leader or how she is in the position she is currently in, or was it something she always planned. According to her response, she said it all happened suddenly and it was not planned. She mentioned one of the biggest reason that motivated her were her struggles that made her even stronger. She wanted her own store after she was deceived by her friend who was also her partner. She took it as a challenge to do something on her own. She said after she opened her own pharmacy, it was her communication skills that helped her the most. Through communication she was able to build strong friendly relationship with the customers and her colleagues. She said it is very important to prioritize relationship with customers and whom you work with. She values her staffs and understand their problems as if it is her own. She is selfless and she might work extra hours as usually the workload in a pharmacy is overwhelming and if in case one of the staff member had to take a day off due to an emergency.
