Reflection On Social Work With Groups

Social Work with Groups course is giving me more insight to the other courses that I have taken previously and some of those that I am currently rolled in such as Social Work with Families and Community Development. After reading the textbook and the discussions in class, the theories of group counseling, viewing groups through multicultural lens, leadership qualities and functions, co-facilitator and group development stood out for me and broaden my perception into Social Work as a profession. The first thing that caught my attention this time is that, theories of counseling are also applicable to group counseling. I learned about the theories in my social work practice class last year. I learned through my group discussions that a good leader should be able to listen to his group. That is, the leader should be able to communicate effectively, give the group the feedbacks they need to know, be punctual and on time for group meetings as well as respecting boundaries. Similarly, a leader should be able to provide emotional stimulations by creating activities for the group when necessary and care for them my offering support and praise when possible.
I am so excited that during the class discussions about leaders’ qualities and functions, I found two weaknesses that could hinder my practice as a good social worker. One of my weaknesses is excessive empathy for clients. Sometimes I feel so much empathy for people and spend so much time with them trying to helping their situations instead of focusing on my work. The second challenge is that, because of my excessive empathy for clients and groups, I might focus on individuals instead of the whole group but I have learned that I need to constantly remind myself to focus on the group and not the
