In the book A Corner of the Universe Hattie owns and lives in a boarding house, and due to this she helps out her guests. I think she is overall very caring, because throughout the book she helps her Uncle Adam out a lot along with others. One Sunday morning about a week or two after Adam came to town Nana and Papa came walking down the street when Adam came to the porch. Nana follows and asks if he can stay at the boarding house while they are at church. Dorothy said yes and so Hattie stayed with Adam for the time Nana and Papa were at church, this is sign of caring because Hattie is showing how she wants to spend time with her Uncle Adam (44,45).
