The Simple Life at Virtue Hill One of the most beautiful places to visit is the Virtue Hill in Vietnam. I grew up there, and I return year after year to seek the solitude. Virtue Hill is the name of a boarding school and means “God Place.” One of the most picturesque sites is looking up the hill from the village road. My mother sent me to an elementary boarding school, at the Virtue Hill for my education. Walking to the hill was my great experience for learning coping skills, for developing self-discipline, and being independence. Living in a new place, I met the difficulties; however, I overcame them. As I grew up, I let go of the dependence of my parents, I became more independent by developing body, mind,…

The idea of simple living was both widely promoted and discouraged from the arrival of the earliest Puritan colonists in 1630 to the extensive industrial growth of the middle 1800s. Many groups and societies aimed to resurrect the simple life and promote it among the masses. Yet each of these revivals were either stopped or drastically slowed down by the American majority’s desire for wealth. A small percentage of Americans consistently lived interpretations of the simple life but they were…

“You have succeeded in life when all you really want is only what you really need.” -Vernon Howard (A Quote By Vernon Howard). Minimalism: A Simpler Life Imagine a simpler life: a life based around one’s needs rather than wants, a life of simplicity. Although this thought might be hard to ponder, especially in today's fast-paced society overwhelmed by fads, crazes, and a demand for more, a new way of living, minimalism, defies this modern lifestyle. Ryan Nichodemus, author and the founder of The…

for a man to have a simple life. He wants them to desire only what is needed to live a life without its extra indulgences. Thoreau alleges that man should not involve himself in so many affairs, but should instead, “let your affairs be as two or three, and not a hundred or a thousand; instead of a million count half a dozen” (277). Through this excerpt, Thoreau expresses the desire people should feel for a simple life. Instead of living life involving themselves with unnecessary matters, they…

Every single person gets tired of their life because of an issue that is taking place. Thoreau must’ve been exhausted with trying to battle it that he has decided to just eliminate it from his existence completely. Thoreau subsequently lived in the woods till he passed. His lifestyle was elementary and he was really gratified about it. He tried to effectuate it everywhere. (“Walden” for example) He believed that man needs to be connected with nature and needs to lead a simple life. However,…

Many people have had an impact on my life, but none quite like my best friend, and partner in crime, Gabrielle. Sure, typical and cliché people such as my mom, dad and teachers have had an impact on my life in some shape or another, but not to the extent that Gabrielle has impacted my life. She has been with me and walked with me throughout my early childhood until the present, difficult time of becoming a young adult and learning lessons essential to my livelihood. She steadfastly joined me in…

    1. Lines from this portion of my story work such as, “Terry sat upon the porcelain god, reading a Science Daily magazine” and “Then in an unseen instant – the roof popped and cracked in a blaze of glory as everything went up into a cloud of sizzling smolder.” – These lines work because they focus in on the comedic tone that I was looking to convey through the story and they show rather than tell. I think that more lines like this could make the story feel more natural. 2. In this portion of the…

I will always remember when my life started to turn around. I continued to make simple changes to my everyday life to help myself get better and better so that I could reach my goals. Without perseverance and the motivation I received from the people that were close to me, I would have never been able to make it to where I am today. All the procrastination I had when I was younger was leading me in the opposite direction then where I wanted to go. Now I’m doing what I love, which is directing…
