the Crown. John MacDonald purchased Lot 36 from the Lord Advocate of Scotland, James William Montgomery, with the assistance of the Roman Catholic Church. John, Donald, Helen and Peggy as well as their Father journeyed to St. John’s Island with 210 settlers in May of 1772. There were many nobles who were in the same situation John was in, at risk of losing their lots, if it became know that Patterson helped John there could be repercussions for both of them. John wanted to keep his land and even acquire the adjacent lot, lot 35; John was very much involved in developing his holdings and keeping his tenants happy.
