Arthur C. Clarke couldn’t have chosen a better title for this brilliant science fiction short story. I’m a sucker for a story with a good title. “The Nine Billion Names of God" revolves around Tibetan Buddhist monks who plan to put together a list that consists of all the names of God. The story opens with Dr. Wagner-- he is asked to work on an automatic sequence computer (Mark V.) that can carry out letters by the lama. They need a computer with letters, so they can write the names of God. Obviously, a computer with only numbers won’t be able to carry it out the task. One of the engineers hired by the lama for three months to work on the computer soon figures out what happens once the Tibetan Buddhist monks type down the last name of God. The world ends. That’s pretty much a stock theme in science fiction typically dealing with post-apocalyptic or apocalyptic settings/issues. Nevertheless, eschatology is a common theme in “The Nine Billion Names of God." *** The conflict is Chuck nor George want to face any blame if what the monks believed that would happen didn’t come to fruition. I liked this part of the story most for a multitude…

out past nine despite my male cousins having no curfew at all. The primary reason behind this is due to the gender differences. Girls are often treated as being delicate and are expected to be ‘proper’, whilst boys did not have the same limitations (Holmes, 2013). Historically, girls were not allowed out without their husbands, fathers, or sons in Indian societies. A lone woman was considered promiscuous (Tung et al., 2012). The double standards are accepted as the norm and continue to be…

biochemical mechanisms involved a number of systems through which gene splicing was attained. To begin with, exon skipping was identified as the common form of gene splicing. Exon was also identified as the coding regions in the gene where proteins were produced for use by different cells with varying functions. Additionally, intron retention provided a significant difference between the genes of prokaryotes and eukaryotes. It involved the event in which intron was retained in the final…

school. Many of today's youth have credit cards before they leave high school, yet they have never had a course in money or how to invest it, let alone understand how compound interest works on credit cards. Simply put, without financial literacy and the knowledge of how money works, they are not prepared to face the world that awaits them, a world in which spending is emphasized over savings. When my oldest son became hopelessly in debt with his credit cards as a freshman in college, I not only…
