“Chains do not hold a marriage together. It is threads, hundreds of tiny threads which sew people together through the years.”Simone Signoret. In the novel Bone by Fae Myenne Ng, Ng gives the reader several opposing aspects of marriage. Bone uses marriage as a connection to the relationships of the characters within the novel. The mother of the three daughters in the novel is Mah. Mah’s first marriage was to a man named Dulcie Fu. This marriage was a relationship that was founded solely on infatuation. Mah was young and thought she was in love. Soon after the first daughter Leila was born, her husband up and left to Australia and never returned. This happens all too often in today’s society. Leon worked on ships and was gone more than he was home, but when he came home Mah would cook him a large dinner celebrating his arrival. Most people thought of Mah and Leon’s relationship as convenient. This shines through Mah’s emotions when she has an affair with her boss while Leon is away working. In other cultures adultery is completely unacceptable. If someone had an affair it was never spoke of and if indeed people knew, you were shunned upon. In modern day culture however adultery is quite common. Is adultery acceptable in certain circumstances? Infidelity is being dishonest and causes trust to be lost. Once the trust in a relationship is lost, there is not much more that can hold a relationship together. Through infidelity and heartache Mah and Leon put the past behind them and tried to move forward. Drugs were introduced to the family which created complicated situations. Mah and Leon worked hard to support the family. Leon always stood up for the family against gossip and rumors spread about them. He always tried to keep the children close and wholesome no matter what circumstances came their way. Unfortunately, Ona committed suicide. She jumped from the thirteenth floor of the Nam Ping Yuem. Leon and Ona had a close relationship that is until Ona started dating Osvaldo. Leon despised Osvaldo because he was the son of Luc whom stole Leon’s business.
