Bullying can happen anywhere, even in small town St. Marys. It was easy for the bully since they hid behind a computer on a social networking site called Twitter. This user created an anonymous account and would post gossip about other people. Most teenagers thought that this account was funny until they got something secret written about them. A lot of the insulting posts led the teens of St. Marys to believe things about themselves that probably were not even true. This page spread so large that it got reported to the police, and eventually shut down. Bullying is a serious problem and most adults don't even know it is happening. However, reporters of cyber bullying suffered from real life bullying in return (Accordino). Statistics show that cyber bullying or real life bullying leads to self-harm and suicidal thinking (Accordino). Not only are there types of bullying, there is also why teenagers bully, like trying to boost their rank in the social pyramid. Eryn Brown, author of “Study Links Teen Bullying to Social Status” in the Los Angeles Times, said that as social status rises, tormenting other people also rises. Nirvi Shah, author of “Study Punctures Stereotypes about Social Status of Bullies,” conducted a study that showed that the teens inside the middle of the bully group bullied-not so much bullying from the leader. They have the mindset that once you get to the top, you don’t need to be mean anymore (Shah). If you’re aggressive, it will show a loss of control in the top of the social pyramid (Shah). However, a clear stereotype of bully or the kid being bullied is not accurate (Shah). Some kids are targeted because they’re too pretty, funny, or nice (Shah). Wyndol Furman and John C. Masters, who are co-authors of “Popularity, Individual Friendship Selection, and Specific Peer Interaction Among Children,” conducted a study that showed that there was a popularity increase if you cooperated with the bully.
