Are social networking sites good for society?
Social networking is a popular form of communicating with friends a few feet away or with people who are across the world from you. It has become one of the top forms of communication from the last ten years or so. The spread of being able to use mobile devices to access the internet gradually transformed the nature of our social interactions.While social networking can be beneficial with being able to talk with loved ones who are farther away, there are risks and negative impacts that come along with it. The cyber world has given bullies an advantage to deliberately harm others or exhibit hostility towards a particular individual through a computer screen or a mobile site. A harmful act of cyber bullying involves creating a fake account or webpage to mock someone or harass them. According to the National Crime Victimization Survey, it is estimated that about 2.2 million people under the age of nineteen experienced cyber bullying in 2011. 71.9% reported that they were bullied only a mere amount of once or twice in the school year. 19.6% have said that they were bullied once or twice a month. 5.3% reported they were bullied to the amount of once or twice a week and 3.1% said they were bullied almost everyday. Once joining these websites you are exposing yourself to identity theft and online predators. Recent research reveals that identity theft affects millions of people a year, costing victims countless hours and money in identity recovery and repair. Social media sites are based on personal information.They encourage users to provide as much information as possible when registering. These websites have limited government oversight, exposing users to identity theft and fraud. With the increased use of social media by society, there are more opportunities than ever before to steal identities or execute fraud online. For example, status updates posted on Facebook or tweets posted on Twitter and many other social media sites can be used by criminals.
