1 in 4 non-heterosexual children are predicted to be bullied per year (“Gay Bullying”, 2013). Bullying among children is already a problem in schools. Now that gay and lesbian politics have become such a large part of society, the opinions and politics of life have rubbed off on children. For someone who is already fragile in their self-identity, such as someone who is trying to find out their sexual orientation or gender identity, a bully can leave lasting psychological scars and trigger the start of depression. Examples of traits and behaviors that can initiate bullying behaviors against a person are gender non-conformity and “coming out” as LGBT (“Suicidal Ideation”, 2012,…

In addition, girl two is the timid girl who sits in the back to avoid attention until one day she voices her opinion on how her peers are ‘ranked’ based on a class assignment. Girl one takes offense to girl one's words and decides to get back at her by spreading rumors and twisting words like string while she plays innocent. Therefore, in a couple of days, everyone is picking on the innocent girl and the ones who aren't, simply turn their backs.…

From the website Bullying Statistics, suicide is the “third major cause of young adult deaths in the United States,” and bullying is one of the major reasons why kids decide to take their lives. I think that bullying is a major issue in this country and needs to be resolved. But as I was reading Amelia’s blog, she portrays that being homosexual can cause more bullying to be attracted to those individuals. I agree with this idea but we have to remember that bullying does not just affect homosexuals. In one year there are over “4,400 deaths among young adults due to suicide.”…

Bullying against transgender teens will only become more rampant if they are forced to use the “correct” bathroom or have special accommodations made for them. There is already a societal stigma towards transgenders for just being, which is made even worse by differentiating them from their peers. Making transgender students use the staff bathroom or the bathroom of their biological sex only encourages the disapproving atmosphere many have to deal with at an institution that is supposed to be a safe learning environment. Transgenders face a much higher risk of suicide than the norm-- a massive 41 percent as compared to the 4.6 percent in the general public (Ungar). Though transgender students may be okay with using alternate accommodations…

People are made fun of on a daily basis for being themselves. People in the L.G.B.T. community are especially made fun of, laughed at and treated like lesser people, just for being themselves. People think that just because you learned something as a part of their religion, that it is the complete truth. People say that just because someone found true love in someone that happens to be the same sexuality as them, that they are not like other people and will not be able to enjoy life like it was meant to. Homophobia is destroying this country because when people are feared/against homosexuality, they are not only insulting that one person, they are insulting an entire lifestyle.…

Bullies tend to choose unpopular kids, so they can keep their status. The most frequent bullying that I see going around, involves students they perceived to be gay or lesbian. In my opinion, I think if they chose to be that way, and if who they are with makes the happy-…

Homophobia is an issue that exists in Oakland schools today where students that are are part of the LGBT identities get bullied and harassed by their peers due to the their sexual identity. This leads students to think of school as an unsafe environment as they take in the harsh words spoken to them seriously. In my survey taken by 188 Oakland Tech students, 50.3% of the survey respondents have seen people getting bullied and harassed by their peers based on their sexual identity at school. As the many members of the LGBTQ identities get targeted based on their sexual identity, many of their peers doing this do not see it as an issue. This leads to students continuing to bully others on the sexual identity.…

LGBTQ youth experience higher levels of bullying and sexual harassment than their heterosexual classmates or peers. This harassment can range anywhere from antigay language, verbal abuse, physical abuse to name calling (Black, Fedewa, & Gonzalez, 2012, p. 322). In the most recent GLSEN survey of more than 6,000 LGBTQ secondary school students, nearly 89% of students reported frequently hearing homophobic remarks in their schools, while 87% reported feeling distressed by the remarks (Kosciw, Greytak, Diaz, & Bartkiewicz, 2010). This survey also found that 85% of LGBTQ youth were verbally harassed, 40% reported being physically harassed, and 19% reported being physically assaulted at school because of their sexual orientation (Kosciw et al.,…

Twitter and Facebook are truly a nightmare to get on when you’re a victim of cyberbullying. Bullies tend to post photos and videos anonymously for the world to see (“What is Cyber Bullying”). They think it is safe to post anonymously because they feel they are less likely to get in trouble by parents or teachers. When things are posted on the internet or sent as text messages, no one truly knows what the words mean; they are just black words on a white screen.…

Opposing this opinion, bullying, whatever the reason behind it is, is still wrong and may end up fatal. One of the most famous cases is the case of Tyler Clementi, who commits suicide after being filmed by two students engaging a sexual activity with a person of the same gender. Between July and September 2010, a series of youth suicide occurred, all believed to be a victim of homosexual bullying (Mellin & Hinojosa, 2011).
