Plants or animals that are created through gene slicing techniques of genetic engineering are called genetically modified organisms or, GMOs. This technique for creating plants and animals was first done in the 1970s. According to Non-GMO Project, “This experimental technology merges DNA from different species, creating unstable combinations of plant, animal, bacterial and viral genes that cannot occur in nature or in traditional crossbreeding.” (Non-GMO Project). This type of genetic modification has started to worry people. Companies are currently not required to label their products to inform customers that their product contains GMOs, and only a few of the many companies voluntarily label their products as GMO-free.

The food that many Americans are consuming is food that has been made in a laboratory. One of the only ways to know if your foods are GMO free is to grow your own foods or buy organic, which are required by The Food And Drug Administration (FDA) to be 100% GMO-free.
Recently, many states have tried to pass bills requiring the labeling of GMOs. The latest state to try to get genetically foods labeled was Washington. Washington was unsuccessful in their efforts. There are currently 64 nations that enforce GMO laws, U.S. not being one of them (CFS). There are only two states in the U.S. that have passed GMO labeling laws, Maine and Connecticut but they will not go into effect until certain conditions are met. According to Food Democracy Now, The United States of America has not required labeling of GMOs, “because the biotech and seed companies like Monsanto have written the rules for our governmental regulatory agencies and paid billions in lobbying, PR and campaign donations over the past two decades” (Food Democracy Now). Numerous powerful biotech companies have made generous donations to keep state GMO labeling bills from passing. I believe that there are many reasons why genetically modified foods should be labeled but one reason is because GMOs may affect our health.
