On July 28, 1914 through November 11, 1918, European nations fought a disastrous war. Today it is perceived as World War I. Many factors led to this destructive battle. Each European nation wanted to successfully be the leading country in Europe. On the other hand, it was not just nationalism but it was many factors combined, such as Militarism, Imperialism and nations forming allies. With all factors considered, the alliance system had a substantial impact as to why World War I occurred. Nationalism is defined as embracing national pride. Countries in Europe wanted to assert their power and independence. By doing so, the nations dignities were rising. The people in each country fought in love of their country. Although nationalism had a crucial impact on the occurrence of World War I, it also fueled Militarism. To have national pride, countries needed to be powerful and controlling. This was usually done by creating and enforcing the nation’s military. For instance, the Naval arms race between Britain and Germany was a major aspect of militarism. Britain was becoming a vigorous country when the building of Dreadnoughts (extreme battleship) were assembled. Additionally, Germany wanted to appear supreme and forceful, which then led to Germany creating powerful battleships just as Britain. Even though militarism was fueled by nationalism, the intention for European nations was becoming furtherly imperial. Imperialism is the ruling of a weaker country by a dominant country. Britain feared that Germany would gain more African territories while Russia was fearful of Serbia/ Austria since they were nearby Russia’s trading route. While these countries had concerns, Italy wanted to become greatly imperial by conquering Tunisia. However, France dominated Italy and France took control of Tunisia.
