Underlying Factors the Contributed to the Outbreak of World War I Early twentieth century, European countries experienced peace between each other. Countries were working together and making large progress in the world. Spreading their power throughout the world with colonies and building a large economic powerhouse with factories. This all ended when Europe plunged into a worldwide war. Killing millions and taking a large toll on each country's economy, World War I was a war to remember. Colonel Dragutin Dimitrevic who was the head of a Serbian secret society said “If Serbia wants to live in honor, she can only do this by war. This war is determined by our obligation to our traditions of the world of our culture” (Doc 2). The Slav people wanted to be united with those who shared the same culture and traditions as them and they believed that war was the only way to free them from Austria-Hungary. Their strong nationalistic feeling was strong enough for them to risk their lives and take on a large empire. Another source that presents nationalism as a factor of WWI is a speech given by the president of France Georges Clemenceau. He said “Everyone’s turn will come. There will not be a child of our land who will not have part in the enormous struggle” (Doc 5). When Clemenceau mentions “our land” he is alluding to the idea that the people of France are one and that they land in which they stand on is theirs. He is pushing the citizens of France to support the war and he is backing it up with nationalistic ideals. He tells the people they must take part in the war and when he gains a large following.
