These provide students with many opportunities to grow and learn skills that will be very valuable in the real world. Students that doubt their abilities and skills benefit from activities outside of school because they gain a sense of esteem from those around them, and they gain confidence which can also lead to confidence in the classroom. They also develop character through these activities. They develop the skills of commitment, control, respect for those over them, and discipline. Another benefit of requiring students to get involved in activities outside of school is they have increased chances of building strong relationships, including friendships, mentorships, and other strong relations (Extracurricular Activities and). They learn many other skills including time management and organization. Since most activities require a time commitment, students develop the skills of planning out their days wisely and efficiently (Hollrah). Also, students involved in such activities are less likely to develop bad, unhealthy habits such as smoking and drinking. There are so many better ways students can spend their days besides staring at the walls or sleeping all day (Dowshen). Being involved in extracurricular activities is linked to higher grades and improving the overall student. “Therefore, they help students to receive better grades by teaching them character building lessons, teaching them lifelong skills, saving some at risk students who would possibly drop out of school, and helping students develop social skills” (Hollrah). There is a positive correlation between extracurriculars and students’ attendance, GPA, test scores, and expected educational goals.
