Extracurricular activities help students develop various interests that allow a student to be more active outside of the classroom. Extracurricular activities can also help students apply classroom knowledge to real world situations. I’ve participated in many extracurricular activities that pertained to my interest in medicine, and because of this, I’m able to use my knowledge of science classes to hopefully pursue a career in the medical field. Since my lifetime goal is to change the world through medicine, my courses and extracurricular activities have helped me prepare for my chosen field of study. Any course with the designation “AP” sounded challenging, but an intensified class like AP Biology sounded more challenging, due to its extensive lab reports and difficult scientific concepts. Taking AP Biology felt like being a doctor, wearing a lab coat or writing a report for every lab we experimented with. AP Biology not only covered the human body at a molecular level, but also provided me the experience of what working in a lab truly felt like. The experience and the class fascinated me and helped me gain some practical experience with tools such as centrifuges or micropipettes. Like AP Biology, Anatomy/Physiology also provided me with lab experience in dissecting various organisms. In addition to dissecting organisms, I also learned about various parts of the human body, from those in the skeletal system, to those in the cardiovascular system. Through both of these courses, my passion and knowledge in science and medicine grew. Although I wanted to pursue a career in the medical field, I was able to narrow down what specializations interested
