Americans Should Have No F's In Schools

Improved Essays
Our schools sports are very exciting to watch, though the students who are playing could have low grades such as D’s or even F’s. Believing in the quote “academics come before athletics” is one to listen to. Keeping higher grade expectations can help students with their future such as getting a job or holding responsibility. Students should be involved in sports or clubs at the school. Though in order to be in them, there should be rules to look up to to participate.

The rule is that Middle School students should receive no F’s in any subject to participate in sports. It quotes, “All 6th graders are eligible at the beginning of the school year. 7th and 8th grades beginning of the year eligibility is determined by the latest marking period grades.” A problem with this rule is that it is not pushing students to get higher grades for school. As the DSISD states in their Beliefs and Expectations Program, “Students who participate in co-curricular and extracurricular activities tend to have higher grade point averages, better attendance records, lower dropout rates, and fewer discipline problems than students

6th graders should have no F’s throughout the year while 7th and 8th graders continue with the rule of no F’s and only two D’s. This could improve grades of students who want to be athletic or want to join sports. Since the students have more limitations with their grades, they would improve and maybe even maintain the higher grade expectations by continuing to go through with it. Also, having the lowest grade to be two D’s could improve the student's responsibilities with their grades which could help them get into different clubs and sports. Another improvement that can help the students, is that it will teach students to study harder and turn in completed homework assignments on time so they’re not failing their classes to be in athletic

As young adults we are impulsive and do not think in the long term without guidelines a lot of kids can be seriously injured and even at an increased risk of death. Another positive that would come out of these new protocols is by putting these policies in place we are keeping student safe in the long term but also backing the meaning of a student-athlete up. The PIAA’s Elephant in the Room The question of whether the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association (PIAA) should separate public and private schools into their own divisions has been a topic of discussion for years. As a product of 14 years of Catholic education, I was fortunate enough to be able to participate in athletics during my high school career. Many of the teams that we played were public school teams from small communities where athletics were almost more important than an education. Unfortunately, I have witnessed firsthand the animosity that has surfaced between public and private schools.…

Unity is a rarity in high schools, and with the addition of sports, there is even greater division as some individuals place themselves “in a separate, untouchable category” (Source 3). Sports have been great fuel to the already existing fire of cliques and exclusion of many types. These extracurriculars have helped to damage what is the already broken schooling system. And while some aspects of sports can be beneficial to a student, they can also be very harmful in an extreme dosage.…

High School Sports Should high schools be all about education, and grades? I couldn’t see myself getting up in the morning excited to learn trigonometry. Let alone be happy in a place like my school. My point would be that I only come to school because I find motivation in the sports that this school has to offer. I tell myself I have to turn my homework in, or I need to read this page, and study so I can pass my test to play Friday night.…

High school sport synthesis The position I stand with when it comes to supporting sports or not in SUHSD is that I think that we should support sports. The source that led me to believe that sports are good towards academics is Daniel H. Bowen and Collin Hitt’s article High-School Sports Aren’t Killing Academics. They state that there's evidence that sports provide success in academics rather than just focusing on sports with lower grades. As for Amanda Ripley’s text The Case Against High School Sports is against having high school sports and says that our academics are not comparable to places like South Korea and Finland.…

Playing sports forced me to get my homework done at school, or make time for the homework after the practice or game. Knowing I had to keep my grades up to stay on the team; sports in a way provided me with an incentive to do my work. At Greenville High School, our coaches not only expect us to pass our classes, but also expect us to get somewhat good grades. Participating in sports in high school, and having good grades went hand in hand for me. Before high school sports, I was never quite comfortable in speaking up and being the leader.…

Many students do sports and to some of them this means, hard work, commitment, and good grades. Yes, grades. In many schools they say you need to have good grades to be able to participate in sports, and sometimes this means students either sitting out of the games and practices, or maybe even being kicked off the team. I believe that this rule should be enforced in all schools. In reality not many people actually end up going to the NFL or any other sports leagues.…

“Sports...is seriously underestimated by educators, who see sports as competing with academic development rather than a route to it.” As I described, in my experience sports in my school did compete with academic development as did a variety of other social factors. I would suggest that if sports are to be a part of a well rounded education, then athletics should be optional to all students, not just the select few. It is no wonder introductory education would be socially divided, and students marginalized when at its core, the structure is flawed. Graff asserts that “the sports world was more compelling than school because it was more intellectual than school, not less.”…

Ultimately, people need to prioritize what is more important, an hour of throwing around a ball or a successful future? Grades are not only important for kids now, but necessary for a prominent future. Parents who are fighting so viciously against this rule always want what is best for their kids, but when you look at the facts, there is no doubt that the “No Pass, No Play” rule is the best way to ensure superior grades and a chance at extracurricular activities and sports. Times have changed and no longer are coaches looking for just a talented athlete, but an athlete but talented on the field and in the classroom. By using the “No Pass, No Play” rule and requiring passing grades for school sports and extracurricular activities act as motivation, prepares them for the responsibility their careers and college, and benefits their grades because they are significantly more important than sports for kids futures.…
