For decades, scholars have debated the value of giving students additional homework to reinforce the lessons taught in school. According to numerous university studies, additional work has consistently proven to be a crucial link to academic success. Therefore, all students should have homework each night to support the skills taught during the school day, improve academic discipline, and help districts improve standardized test scores. As anyone who has ever mastered a skill knows, the learning process requires repeated practice in order to retain, and effectively utilize new information. In a 2010 investigation conducted by Dr. Frank McFrankerson of Yale University, it was found that students who spent more than 20 hours a week completing homework enjoyed a 25% greater GPA than those who did not make the same time investment (5).…

The book, The Homework Myth, suggests that teachers should show or tell the advantages of the homework they are about to assign, before actually assigning it to the students (Khon 48). This “busy work” often takes away from the material that students actually enjoy learning about, and has little value in itself. It is essential for teachers to understand that students have lives outside school, therefore assigning homework that takes up more time than it is worth is an unproductive use of the students’ time. By reducing the length of assignments and prioritizing homework in specific subjects, such as Math, Science, and English, it gives student more time to learn (Bempechat 10). While it takes some students thirty minutes to complete assignments, it takes others over ninety minutes to complete the same assignments.…

Even though many students may not enjoy doing homework, it teaches them that learning does not only take place in a classroom, but anywhere where they are curious to examine closer into information that interests them. As Hannah Sinha, head of a Manhattan Montessori School, stated: “Education is half school and half home.” (“New York”). Just as Sinha says, the education of children happens everywhere they go; by looking into topics or activities that interest them, they will naturally educate themselves on that particular subject. However, this does not mean that homework is not needed, for it teaches children to learn how to educate themselves in that way.…

Showing a kid how to ride a bicycle then giving him two tries and after about two weeks you expect him to know how to ride a bike because of these two tries you gave him, is just like teaching a student how to solve a problem and expecting him to know how to solve it on the test next week without providing enough exercises; at the end in both cases he’s going to fail. In other words, if students stopped having homework assignments their tests scores will drop. Another strong argument I…

The practical effects are also demonstrated, as teachers do need to take the time in class for students to cover large chunks of the material. At the age of these students, providing responsibility and incentive to do well in school will be important for the rest of their lives as homework will be assigned in college and essentially one will have homework for their career as well. Teaching students now to engage in their homework and see a purpose in it will enhance learning and quicken the pace of school, so that less time is spent in class re-teaching what was previously assigned. As with anything in life, practice is the only way to get better at something and this is why homework is an important tool in schools. It provides time to practice important material outside of school so that when one comes back the following day, they have improved.…
