According to the article “The Motivational Benefits of Homework”, the reason homework is so essential is because it plays a key role in the development of a child’s motivation to achieve (Bempechat 2). Another reason homework is important for a child’s education is because homework assignments provide time and background teens need to establish study habits that are valuable for learning. Some of these important skills include teaching teenagers that it is acceptable to make mistakes and the importance of effort (Bempechat 3). Homework also gives students an opportunity to reinforce their knowledge of what they have learned in class (Hancock 1). The book, The Homework Myth, suggests that teachers should show or tell the advantages of the homework they are about to assign, before actually assigning it to the students (Khon 48). This “busy work” often takes away from the material that students actually enjoy learning about, and has little value in itself. It is essential for teachers to understand that students have lives outside school, therefore assigning homework that takes up more time than it is worth is an unproductive use of the students’ time. By reducing the length of assignments and prioritizing homework in specific subjects, such as Math, Science, and English, it gives student more time to learn (Bempechat 10). While it takes some students thirty minutes to complete assignments, it takes others over ninety minutes to complete the same assignments.
