As anyone who has ever mastered a skill knows, the learning process requires repeated practice in order to retain, and effectively utilize new information. In a 2010 investigation conducted by Dr. Frank McFrankerson of Yale University, it was found that students who spent more than 20 hours a week completing homework enjoyed a 25% greater GPA than those who did not make the same time investment (5). More specifically, during the same 4 year study, it was found that of the 1,000 students who participated, over 80% showed an increase in their grades within the first quarter of increased homework effort (McFrankerson 6). One finding in the the Yale study concluded that those who were disciplined, and put studying before recreation were less stressed, and performed better on tests (Mc Frankerson 8). McFrankerson’s team also concluded that the students who had a dedicated “study time” each day were less likely to miss important assignment deadlines (9). It stands to reason that if a student organizes their schedule, and makes studying a top priority, positive results will follow.
