Importance Of A Special Education Teacher

There are many different reasons for why people want to be teachers. It could be because of someone who helped them love learning. It could be because they want to accomplish something, or help shape the next generation, or it could be just because they love to help people learn, like me. I have only ever wanted to be a teacher, and I have so many reasons behind why. My cousin Barron, the children’s faces, and the students succeeding are some of my reasons. Ever since I was little I have always wanted to be a teacher, I just could never figure out what kind. Did I want to teach math or history? Did I want to teach music or english? All I knew is that one day I wanted to be the lady at the front of the classroom teaching the class something …show more content…
His name is Barron, and he is my baby cousin. He is eight years old, in second grade, and has autism. I used to sit in his classroom all the time and see what he was learning, and I realized that children with special needs need a teacher who can be there for them at any moment, for any reason. Their teacher should not only be helping them succeed in the classroom, but also in life. I want to be that teacher that helps children like Barron to succeed in class. When I would take Barron to school he would get so excited that his entire face would light up just because he got to go to class. Barron, and all of the other students were extatic all of the time to see their teacher, and to learn something new. His teacher made learning fun for him, and made him enjoy class. When I become a special education teacher, I want my students to be as excited as he was to come to my …show more content…
The main thing I want to accomplish as a teacher is to help students learn. I want to change children 's lives and give them information that they will remember for the rest of their lives. I hope to accomplish helping special needs students be able to function on their own in a normal society without anyones help, and help make them self-sufficient. I also hope to accomplish helping my students succeed at everything they do, but know that sometimes even if they fail that it is okay. One day I want my legacy to be the woman that helped. I want to be remembered as the teacher that helped her students no matter what the circumstances.I want to be the teacher that helped them work towards, and accomplish their goals, their personal mountain. When my students climb to the top of their mountain and look back, I hope they think that I helped them on their way up. Ultimately I do not want to be remembered just as the fun teacher, but the teacher who helped them learn. I don’t care about being remembered so much, compared to to my students learning

I knew from a young age that teaching was what I was meant to do. Shadowing a teacher for a day in eight grade cemented for me that I was going to be a teacher. While the age of the student I was wanting to teach has changed as I've gotten older that drive to teach has never left. Working as an Educational Assistant at St. Louis Community College has only poured gasoline on that fire and passion for teaching. I can no longer put off pursuing my education to become a mathematics professor.…

The first that I have learned is that each child needs to be handled differently. In order to determine how to handle certain situations with students with exceptionalities, I have learned that I really need to get to know these students, what they can and cannot do, and their specific needs, both emotionally and academically. Another thing that this field experience has taught me is that just because a child is considered exceptional; it does not mean that it has to limit what they are capable of. While I was observing and working one-on-one with these students, I came to realize just how smart they were. This experience has helped me understand that having exceptional students in a general education classroom will be more work for me as their educator; however, the longer I can manage them in the classroom, the more they will benefit from it. I have also come to understand that students with exceptionalities might not get something the first, second, or third time, but as their teacher, I need to keep working with them until they do get…

Before taking this course and being out in the field for 20 hours, special education was not my ideal teaching job. Special education was always intimidating to me because there is so much important information that is needed. IEP’s, parents, and goal setting are just a few to name that intimidated me until now. After getting to experience being in a special education room with the students and asking Nicole Degroot questions about these topics, I now I feel that special education may be the positon for me. When I left Kindergarten, I knew that I wanted to be a teacher because of her and to this day I haven’t changed my mind about it. Whenever I go home to Houston and am in the area, I always make it a priority to go by her classroom and visit her. Since I was young, I have spent both my school years and summers babysitting and nannying, and both of these things have shown me that I absolutely love spending my time with and interacting with children.…
