My Observation Of Special Education

Before taking this course and being out in the field for 20 hours, special education was not my ideal teaching job. Special education was always intimidating to me because there is so much important information that is needed. IEP’s, parents, and goal setting are just a few to name that intimidated me until now. After getting to experience being in a special education room with the students and asking Nicole Degroot questions about these topics, I now I feel that special education may be the positon for me. From the first day of my observation hours, Mrs. Degroot made me feel completely welcome and comfortable, which made the experience that much better. Mrs. Degroot’s classroom was a lot different than other special education classrooms …show more content…
I knew that all IEP’s are different because of the student, but it was really helpful to see exactly what is written. Some of the IEP’s were really long and some of them were shorter. Mrs. Degroot said it depended on their needs and goals she has set or them. I have practiced writing IEP’s for my other special education classes, but to actually see a real IEP made me not so intimated by them as much. Mrs. Degroot did share a classroom with another special education teacher, but I never saw them co-teach together. They had their own students who would come to their side of the room, but they still helped each other out. If Mrs. Degroot had to do something, Mrs. Welch would step in as the teacher and vice-versa. If I get the chance to become a special education teacher, I really hope I have a co-worker that is as helpful as what Mrs. Degroot and Mrs. Welch are. These ladies are absolutely wonderful teachers because you can see how much their students mean to them and how much they mean to their …show more content…
After having my amazing experience in Mrs. Degroot’s classroom, my mind has completely changed. I never thought that I was the special education type, but now I can see myself being a special education teacher. I am now ready to take on that challenge and hope that I am able to be as great as Mrs. Degroot. I have taken so much with me from this experience that I will forever be grateful for. I have learned that if you treat your students like Mrs. Degroot did, they will respect you and want to complete their work. Special education is not intimidating to me anymore and I look forward to the day I get to have my own
