In Dan Neil’s article “Company Town: Seduced by a Juicy Burger” published in the LA Times, he criticizes the fast food advertising industry in a sarcastic manner while wondering if the industry has gone too far. The article, written in 2009, is almost laughably outdated compared to today’s carnal advertisements. Today it seems unfeasible for companies not to objectify women in their commercials. This primitive approach fuels the fire in that women are nearly props more so than the product that they’re supposed to be selling.…

Marketers, those who are in charge of a company’s advertisement, have to appeal to the largest group of people that they can for it to be truly successful (Source F). To do this, they attempt to create a commonplace among viewers such as Dove’s, “Camera Shy” campaign which focused on insecurity. Though this commercial focused primarily on women, it focused on women of different ages and ethnicities and only focused on women to lift this group up and fight society's pressure on women to be conscious about their body. Positive messages like this can have a long lasting impact on many, especially young adults. In “Advertising: Information or Manipulation?”…

Advertisements in fashion have a significantly negative effect on women 's self-esteem and body image. Ladies, particularly young ladies examine themselves and may feel frail about their appearance when flipping through a magazine loaded with commercials. A wide variety of advertisements have been creating plentiful images of men and women for years now regarding gender roles and sex diversity. Ford (2008) explains the advertising industry in particular has formed the impression that “sex sells,” now using women’s bodies as sex objects. In addition to this, previous research has also shown men are being outstripped when it comes to women being sexualized (Ford, 2008). More importantly, the advertising industry has shown what the “accurate” gender roles for men and women are to be. Men are to be dominant, tough, strong, independent, and detached.…

Gender is a socially constructed ideal, where the main purpose is to associate ones physical and behavioral characteristics with either being male or female. The issue is not with gender itself, but with the restrictions that gender puts on an individual and the fact that gender becomes something that the individual must strive to emulate. This ideal is used in advertisements, mainly because it is prominent and apparent in society. Advertisement agencies, such as Secret, manipulate this ideal to ensure the success of their product to the desired audience. Due to the fact that the advertisement agencies, through the use of print ads, further the restrictions of gender, they also further construct and communicate the gender norms and expectations…

For instance, the media will show off the latest magazine cover of Jennifer Lopez, who looks as stunning as ever, which ultimately has other woman questioning themselves on why they do not look as good as her. That causes self doubt as well as unhealthy comparisons, since women are doubting themselves on how they look compared to Jennifer Lopez. In the article, “The Natural Beauty Myth” Garance Franke-Ruta explains, “Critics of the beauty industry argue that it attacks women’s self-esteem as it raises the beauty bar impossibly high” (68). I agree with this statement, since many women really have their self-esteem become damaged simply by looking at a beautiful model in the fashion industry. The influence media has on women is becoming greater and even more dangerous after each passing day.…

H&M created a video advertisement featuring women of all ages, races, ethnicities, sizes, shapes, and sexualities. This advertisement challenges hegemonic femininity as it presents every woman as strong and beautiful. On one hand, H&M created an advertisement that appeals to the resurgence of the feminist movement by challenging classic beauty norms and ideals. On the other hand, H&M uses slave labour, targets customers with specific body types, and features an array of other advertisements that promote narrow representations of women who share unrealistic beauty standards (i.e. long legs, thin waist, smooth hair, arched eyebrows, etc.). H&M utilizes female empowerment and liberation as a tool to market their clothing to female consumers.…
