In the beginning of Charles Camosy’s somewhat biased article “Why Americans Should Stop Watching Football,” he stresses why we need to give up America’s most famous and most loved sport: football. He has us think of the movie “Concussion,” starring Will Smith. This controversial movie is about how football causes serious brain damage to the players. Camosy says this very movie is given an overall rating of sixth place.…
From Lost Innocence to Gained Experience War does not only include army warfare, but also personal experiential wars. Feelings of fear, hostility and indignation dominate peacefulness; as we all identify rivals in the world around us and “pit ourselves” against them so as to have an object for hate. Personal or political wars may result ignorance in the human heart and result in inability to understand self and others. Furthermore, realities of life permeate and threaten peace in the world of youth as seen in the Devon School in A Separate Peace. War can hold strange parallels to sport as also in the Winter Carnival, and the atmosphere created can prevail in a time of war, along with the emotions, conflicts, and jealousy that can result…
Although these athletics seem to be the same as one another with similar names, football and futbol have multiple key differences and similarities. Football, a sport resembling rugby, uses an egg-shaped, inflated leather ball to score points in multiple ways including a touchdown, safety, field goal, and extra point that originated in America. Futbol, originating in Europe, and known as soccer, uses an oval-shaped leather ball and has players pass the ball with their feet to attempt to shoot into the goal defended by the opposing team's goalie. The sports relate with being a contact sport, going into overtime, and gaining a large fan base. The athletics also differ from proper tackles, ways of sudden death, and location of popularity.…
In Chris Lynch’s book, Hit Count, he looks at the controversial topic of concussions and other head injuries in organized football. During the course of the book, the main character Arlo, continuously gets hit and makes hits on the football field that surely take a toll on his body. Even with the concern of his mom and coaches, Arlo refuses to see that the way he plays football is dangerous. From a psychological perspective he is in complete denial of the peril he is putting his body through after every blow. To analyze this topic to its core one must look into the work of Lynch, as well as the medical evidence of head injuries in football.…
Daniel J. Flynn’s argument of why “Football Does a Body Good” is extremely unconvincing. The evidence that he presents throughout the essay fails to debunk the counterargument of how dangerous football can be. The essay is full of statistics and examples of how football can positively benefit the readers- unfortunately all the facts that are shown are ineffective. He unsuccessfully argues toward the benefit of football by failing to present appeals to reason, having a lack in his credibility, and having a biased and argumentative tone for the duration of his essay. Aristotle’s three proofs are logos, ethos, and pathos.…
In the early to mid-1900’s sports journalism in America was quickly becoming more and more popular. Two of the most prolific journalist were Grantland Rice and W.C. Heinz. Both had differing writing styles, Rice leaning towards more exaggerations and Heinz relying more on facts and letting the subject tell the story. Rice’s myth-making and overall exaggeration of sports was entertaining, Heinz’s more realistic and use of dialog resulted in overall better and more clear articles.…
McMurtry uses several different comparisons to the game of football in his essay (i.e: war, hockey, and circus). Are all of these equally effective in developing his argument and are there any other good comparisons he did not use? The author places many parenthesis throughout his text and some appear necessary while others do not. How may a statement contained within parenthesis be deemed necessary or unnecessary?…
"A Horseman in the Sky" is a short story written by Ambrose Bierce. It tells of a young man from the south who had enlisted in the Union army during the Civil War. One day, he found himself in a situation where he had to kill a Confederate soldier, his father. "War" is a short story written by Jack London, about a young man in war who had the opportunity to kill an enemy soldier, but didn't. The same man ended up killing him.…
In Bob Ryan’s article “I Can Hardly Believe It’s Legal,” Ryan speaks about the violent characteristics the game of football has but still finds a way to entertain the American society. Even though Ryan manages to watch football, he doesn’t agree with the brutal, savagery rules the game has to offer. In “Derrick Gordon Finds his Freedom” written by Cyd Zeigler, he concentrates on sport stereotypes our society has laid upon our athletes. Derrick Gordon, an NCAA basketball player, went through a time of despair when he couldn’t face up to his family and friends about his sexuality. Besides the fact both articles concentrate on two separate issues, together they speculate the physical and mental injuries sports offer and how the values learned overweigh those conditions.…

Football pushed students to excel and become self disciplined. Children learn how to practice on their own and tricks to improve. Children also are more respectful of adults because of the mentality of the coach to athlete relationship. Ultimately, football pushed young people to do better in school, become more self disciplined, and more well-rounded people, all of which will help them later in life. Football goes far beyond men in uniforms throwing a ball back and forth.…
Both sports use a ball to play but the size of the ball is very different between the sports. The size and how the balls are shaped are also very different. A football is a shape of a sphere where as a basketball is round circular…
When I first played high school football, I was a tiny freshman who was lost and too self- centered to see the good football would bring to me. Now I believe football has shaped me into a man. It has taught me to be aware of my surroundings. It has taught me to listen and respect my coaches. It has taught me brotherhood with my teammates.…
