Cheryl Smith's Leadership As A Role Model

Cheryl Smith works at Howard College here in San Angelo, and coordinates with the Director and Assistant Director of the West Texas Training Center also located on the campus. Smith is the Assistant Director of Adult Education and Literacy (AEL). She is the AEL Career Navigator and Coordinator, and can be found in the Academic Building in office SAA120 on the campus. Smith coordinators with eight other teachers that help adults study for their General Education Diploma (GED), and various entrance exams. In addition, she advises students on career choices, arranges for testing, ensures all the staff receives the training they need, and coordinators all of the public relations for the AEL program (personal communication, November 18, 2016). …show more content…
An effective leader must be able to envision the overall performance by incorporating rational, strategic, global, and complex ideas based on a social dynamic (McKee, 2013). Smith’s leadership philosophy focuses on many aspects of transformation leadership. She serves as a role model through idealized influence, and acknowledges each individual’s intrinsic value, by respecting their thoughts, ideas, and opinions even if they go against her personal or religious beliefs. Her Inspirational motivation depicts a clear vision through communication and articulation where every individual is working toward the same goals. Smith encourages her team to take risks and explore new avenues to learn. She believes nothing changes if risks are not taken; failure leads to new ideas that eventually work (Banks, McCauley, Gardner, & Guler, 2016). She borrows elements from the servant’s leader’s lifestyle by empowering others to take on responsibility and trusting they will do their part.
