Ashley Fultz: Servant Leader

Improved Essays
A fellow nursing student attending Boise State University, Ashley Fultz is a servant leader in everything she does. Ashley, and her twin Amber, and I have known each other since before we were in kindergarten. We took swimming lessons together, and from that point on a long-lasting and fulfilling friendship began to blossom. Ashley’s personality is one that radiates with positivity, this combined with her dedicated work ethic, and empathy for the other person gave her the opportunity to hold many leadership roles during the four short years of high school. Ashley was a student council senator for all four years, vice president of the debate team for four years, president of the state champion speech team during her senior year, and a manager …show more content…
According to (BLAH), “the servant-leader seeks to identify the will of a group and helps to clarify that will.” As president of the speech team Ashley sought to assure that she listened to the desires of the group and implement them into the direction she took the team. In her daily life Ashley is one that always listens to anyone who needs a ear. She provides suggestions on how to do things, but never forces her will on the other. The characteristic of awareness is exemplified in Ashley’s understanding of the impact and actions of her words. Her decisions are never rash, but always well thought out and grounded in her beliefs. Through her ability to listen and her awareness of both herself and the other Ashley also exemplifies in the characteristic of helping others to grow, “The servant-leader recognizes the tremendous responsibility to do everything in his or her power to nurture the personal and professional growth of employees and colleagues” (CITE). Ashley values the other person at all times and is always providing advice and tools for helping them to grow into the best possible person they can be. As president of the speech team she did this by helping others to perfect their speech. However, the …show more content…
For members of the speech team Ashley asked them each to write down their goals at the beginning of the year, held them accountable to these goals for the entire year, and pushed them to take them even further, “The servant as leader always empathizes, always accepts the person but sometimes refuses to accept some of the person’s effort or performance as good enough” (CITE 4 FRICK). In my own relationship with Ashley she has always pushed me to be the best possible person I could be. She never expressed judgment towards me when I failed to hold myself accountable to the things I wanted out of my life, but promoted me to do better and provided me with encouragement and a basis of support to improve on my own failings. As a servant leader Ashley makes those she lead more autonomous and stronger in their own life. She also provided them with the building blocks to become servant leaders

The servant leader would lead the way by hosting a club or coaching a team, while the charismatic leader would encourage teachers to get involved by recognizing and praising skills and abilities that they possess. Hosting events that the community can attend not only contributes to student development, but also creates opportunity for parental involvement in meaningful educational activity. One of the most profound moments in my career was when a father attended a parent/teacher conference specifically to thank me for my work as the director of a play in which his son took part. The son had been a very quiet and uninvolved individual who essentially, “came out of his shell”.…

In Student Affairs we can challenge students to think creatively, speak boldly, and lead fiercely in their college careers. Students attend college to gain knowledge and learn at a higher level of thinking, to me that means we must challenge them to adapt and learn more about themselves, the world they live in, and how they would like to fit into the world around them. This concept is greatly encouraged by the Social Change Model of Leadership Development, a framework that encourages students to learn about integrity, authenticity, inclusion, meaning making and collaboration (Komives, 2011). As Student Affairs professionals, we can provide students with leadership experience and challenge their developmental growth through leadership, teaching students that leadership is not only about holding a position but rather the behaviors of working towards shared goals and ideals (Komives,…

As a leader, I try to possess qualities of a servant leader while completing everyday tasks in either my leadership class or during a basketball or volleyball practice. Being a servant leader is stressed in the ASB Leadership class. In this class, all thirty of us complete tasks everyday that go unnoticed and unrecognized by our peers.…

As an ethical leader, Michelle has continued to “move others to do the right things, in the right ways and for the right reasons” (Northouse, Pg. 274). As an example, during the promotion of her programs, celebrities like Beyoncé, LeBron James, and Taylor Swift promoted the First Lady initiatives through social media and music video. As the campaign reached millions of new followers, Michelle’s ability to collaborate with celebrities and athletes is evident that she has the power to make change through others. Furthermore, the definition of a great leader is someone who works to create and improve the world. As I conclude, becoming a leader that has helped secure fifty million kids healthier school lunches, and has educated over 375,000 adolescent children in Africa.…
