John Smith Leadership

Leaders are not born they are molded by their experiences in life. John Smith’s life led him to become one of Jamestown’s most successful leaders, he was the primary reason the colony even survived. After leaving home at a young age he was accomplishing feats that would ultimately prepare him for what awaited him in Jamestown. Feats such as beheading three Turks, escaping his captors, and capturing Alba Regalis a territory under the Turks for 60 years.
How many of us can go around stating we beheaded 3 people for the glory of our lord in our twenties? I know I cannot, however John Smith can; after the Moslem commander, Lord Turbshaw challenged any captain to come challenge him for his head. It started a killing spree of sorts for Smith not

You can pretty much singlehandedly lead a colony. That’s exactly what John Smith did with the colony of Jamestown. “From the second week in September 1608, through the following august, John Smith ruled the colony almost singlehandedly.” What got him there? A city, called Alba Regalis ruled by the Turks. It was said Alba Regalis was impregnable, however Smith conquered it. “If he couldn’t go through the defense lines, he could go over them, Smith reasoned.” At midnight he rained death upon the Turks, the distracted Turks fell to might of the Christian army. His ability to come up with such ideas, and determination came in handy against the Indians in Jamestown. A more specific example occurred when he was punishing two Indians for stealing an English pistol. When one of them passed out due to smoke inhalation, Smith used this as an advantage to trick the Indians into believing he had powers. “The Chickahominy thought their tribesman dead; Smith knew better but seized the opportunity to add superstition to his arsenal of controls over the Indians by promising to restore the victim to life in return for peace with the tribe.” Between conquering a city using a forceful but creative idea, and conquering a colony by tricking Indians, there isn’t much different. Smith’s cunningness allowed him to capture Alba Regalis, and it was again his cunningness that allowed him to push the colony towards

If an organization aims to be successful, which most do, a crucial part in that success is strong leadership skills and a healthy employee/boss relationship. CEO Jay S. Schottenstein, who runs American Eagle Outfitters is an example of how communication can positively and negative effect an organization. This company uses a classical approach with a downward communication style. There is a lack of attentiveness towards employees but have a high understanding and care for production and clientele. I have personal experience on how corporate communicates and operates with employees because I was employed by this company during high school.…

Although John Smith and William Bradford were instrumental to the founding and development of the colonies in the new world, their writings reveal differences in personality, with John Smith being arrogant and self-centered and William Bradford being focused on the greater community which ultimately makes them very different leaders. Smith’s, The General History of Virginia, makes himself seem like the hero of Jamestown, even if it meant stretching the truth. In his account he wrote, “committed the managing of all things abroad to Captain John Smith… himself always bearing the greatest task.” This illustrates the exaggeration and arrogance in his writing because he speaks about himself in third person and he tells the reader he always took…

While often for just causes, these attacks nonetheless proved to be a considerable challenge for the colonists, specifically in Jamestown. John Smith records one such instance and declares, “For wronging a soldier but the value of a penny, I have caused Powhatan send his own men to James Town…they shot me, slue three of my men, and by the folly of them that fled took me prisoner.” This describes the famous moment where John Smith is taken by the Virginia Algonquin Indians. In the Indian village where he is taken, the tribe prepares to execute the colonial leader.…

Also since Bradford's life is very heavily based off of his Puritan religion, his writings include his religious beliefs which assist him in explaining certain situations. Smith's main goal when writing his literature was to encourage settlement in Jamestown; whereas Bradford's goal was to tell of his experiences in Early America. Another factor when reading the literature of both men is the distinctively different views of Native Americans. Smith refers so Natives as "Savages," even though those "Savages" helped the people of his colony survive through the bad leadership. In contrast, Bradford always refers to the Natives as "Indians."…

Leadership was a huge step during the slave era. Whoever was an abolitionist had to be a great leader, one that nobody could ever replace. This is why I’ve chosen Harriet Tubman out of all the abolitionists, to represent leadership, and the qualities of leadership that are so hard to find in a person. Harriet Tubman was born into slavery in March 1822, and everyone saw her as just a regular slave, working in the despairing heat in the day and sleeping in the freezing and windy cold night. Thus, Harriet was not like the others thought she was, and one night she escaped her captivity and ran off to experience freedom for the first time, swearing to herself that she would return to the others and free them.…

Everyone has someone they look up to, since they were a child maybe and up to this day. Just a few days ago I was watching a movie about James Braddock, and now he is one of the main people I look up to. Though not all leaders are champions, they are both courageous and passionate about what they are trying to accomplish James J. Braddock was one of the many people trying to strive for accomplishment during the Great Depression. In every good film, there is an introduction, a rising action, a climax, a falling action, and a conclusion. These are basic staples when it comes to writing and creating a film. But when it comes to the characters in a film, there are some other staples as well. One of these such staples is that there needs to be a solid leader in the film, one who can keep the story moving or put the main character back on track. In Lee Daniel’s “The Butler”, however, we see multiple leaders over the course of the movie, all showing different tactics of leadership that are stated in Barry Posner and James Kouzes’ book “The Leadership Challenge”.…
