Michele Carter Leadership Style

Michele Carter is the Director of the Student Support Services program at Bluegrass Community & Technical College. She has over ten years’ experience working with education opportunity programs. She is extremely organized and expects the staff to maintain organized records of student contact. Before having a career in education she was in the United Stated Military and says that she learned how to be organized and structured during her time in the service.
Michelle describes her leadership style as an experience driven, encouragement providing educator. She shared that over the years she has worked with multiple populations from various backgrounds. During that time she has achieved great success, but has also made a few mistakes along the way. She stated that the mistakes did not discourage her from working with the student population but it helped her grow and develop into a better counselor, director and leader. Due to the lessons she learned during the beginning of her career and her life, she urges her staff to seek help and ask questions when they are unsure about something.

Michelle is currently working on her Doctorate degree and says that although she loves the work that she is doing she knows that she will eventually move on. She says that educating her staff on how to ensure the continuity of the program is extremely important because at the end of day the program was created to assist students with college completion and whether or not she is there the students need the services of the program. Students always come first to Michelle and she feels they should always come first to those who work in the student affairs
