Violent video games causing violence Millions of people play video games every day. The thought that they might cause violence is disturbing and also an interesting concept.
It should be noted that exposure to violence is nothing new to society. For centuries people attended public executions with the whole family or went to cadaver dissection viewings. Violence has existed in literature since people created the written language (Goldfein).
In the year of 2013 a naval yard shooting occurred in September, killing 12 people, this was said to have been caused by the over exposure to violent video games (Strasburger). Boys out play girls in video games 2.5 hours to 1 hour game screen time every day. Aggression is seen more frequently in boys than girls, the boys often have more energy to dispose (Olson). It is uncommon that boys will often play more than 40 hours a week. According to a study in 2008 on violent video games, 60 percent of middle school boys who have played one or more mature rated games have hit or beat up someone compared to the other 39 percent of boys who have not played any violent video games. About 45 percent of kids in grades 7-12 stated one reason they play violent video games was to let out their anger (Goldfein). The ages 11 through 14 play the most video games. United States video game players at the ages of 8-18 play at a pathological level which can cause things like family problems. Also from the ages 8-17 who have played violent video games, they had a increase in aggression from things like hitting, shoving and pushing (Rettner). Many of games that have violent or sexual content have a age restriction. Games like Grand Theft Auto have a 17 and older restriction when playing the game but research shows that 56 percent of under aged adolescents play the game (Warburton).
